Carling's sons William, 18, and John, 12, were helpers and on their father's death in 1845 the boys were able to take over the business.
In 1849 William and John reorganized the company as W. and J. Carling Co. John Carling, who was knighted in 1893 and appointed to the Senate in 1896, became a prominent figure in Canadian politics.
The company's fortunes were at their lowest ebb, but John Carling, although saddened by his brother's death, accomplished the seemingly impossible and had the brewery restored and functioning 10 weeks after the fire, a feat which earned him a respectful editorial salute from the Toronto Mail.

Sir John Carling, PC, KCMG (January 23, 1828 – November 6, 1911) was a prominent politician and businessman from London, Ontario, Canada.
John’s political career began in municipal government, and in 1858, he was the elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada.
In 1875, John and his brother William built a new Carling Brewery, and an even larger one was built when this burned down in 1879.

Sir John Carling was born on a farm in London Township near Hyde Park in 1828.
Carling's father, Thomas, immigrated from Yorkshire in 1818, putting him among the earliest settlers in the Township.
Bottling both ale and porter, by 1860 the brewery was using 18-20,000 bushels of grain a year, 12-18,000 pounds of hops and malting 22,000 bushels of barley a season.

In the election of 1857—58 Carling was returned to the Legislative Assembly and he would retain his seat until confederation; in 1862 he served briefly as receiver general in the Macdonald-Cartier ministry.
Defeated in the general election of 1891, Carling was promptly appointed to the Senate, in April, and thus enabled to continue as minister of agriculture.
A 1902 address by Carling, “The pioneers of Middlesex,” was published in the London and Middlesex Hist.
