The Parish of St John’s, Buttershaw, Bradford was founded in 1954 with the appointment of Fr William Bryson, curate at St Mary’s, Halifax, as the first parish priest.
The main contractor was Mr P Kiernan and due to good organisation and the fine weather of that autumn the church was ready for Midnight Mass at Christmas 1955.
Because of this rapid growth the Bishop judged that St John’s needed an assistant priest: he appointed first Fr Les Bishop and then Fr Lawrence Lister and he was replaced by Fr Charles Holmes.

It is worse in many countries …” Already in 1965 he was writing to Cardinal Heenan of “the graver dangers to faith and morals openly propounded at the Council”.
