John Carpenter: They Live   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
Carpenter has combined his masterful touch of science-fiction with a strong social commentary, delivering a thriller of a political satire which reflects shades of our society today: a society where monetary gain is the only game in town, and where one’s soul may be easily exchanged for power and prestige.
RODDY PIPER, who, as John Nada, has to learn to live by his wits on the street, was a homeless teenager in reality and knows the danger of the streets intimately.
Carpenter is able to obtain this level of intimacy with his production team because he routinely works with an established core of cast and crew members who share his enthusiasm for the filmmaking process.

Four men reached the final of the 400 meters: Americans Taylor, John Carpenter of Cornell and William Robbins, and Englishman Wyndham Halswelle, who was the favorite, in part because Taylor was not at his level of a year earlier.
Carpenter led into the homestretch, then bore from the pole to the outside of the track, obstructing Halswelle as the Englishman tried to pass.
Significantly, while Carpenter led the Americans at the finish of the disputed 400-meter race, Taylor was selected to run that leg on the relay.

John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another.
The best of director John Hughes' many teen-angst films of the 1980s, this perceptive, absorbing comedy-drama basically puts five different teenage archetypes in a classroom for Saturday detention and lets them interact.
John Hughes, you get a pure classic that is a god teen movie to see, not that "Bring It On", "Without A Paddle", "Amarican Pie" crap of today.

'THE THING,' HORROR AND SCIENCE FICTION - New York Times
JOHN CARPENTER'S ''The Thing'' is a foolish, depressing, overproduced movie that mixes horror with science fiction to make something that is fun as neither one thing or the other.
Carpenter has demonstrated that he can make good, comparatively plain, old-fashioned scare movies (''Halloween'') and effective suspense thrillers (''Escape From New York''), but he seems to lose his own head when he combines two or more genres, as he did in ''The Fog'' and does again here.

Anyhoo, John carpenter is one of the few directors left that when I hear about an upcoming project I can get excited without even hearing a sinopsis.
My constant complaint about post-80s Carpenter, which I like to scream to the rafters every chance I get, is that the reason JC's body of work has become has so bad lately, is that many of his simpatico collaboraters of his early era have left him, or moved on to bigger and better things.

A movie can also be a statement about movies in general, a movie by a certain director can be an interpretation of what he has done before, of what the genre and/or the entire industry has been doing lately, or in general.
Grant an experienced artist the ability to know his stuff, grant him a bit more hindsight even: As a stand-alone film, the name John Carpenter removed, completely judged on its own, this is a hell of a bad film, almost, it still has some good moments and a strong desire for technical perfection.
