Before he was an astronaut, Casper was a United States Air Force fighter pilot in the Vietnam War.

Casper graduated from the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, California, and subsequently became Chief of the F-4 Test Team.
Casper was then named Operations Officer and later Commander of the 6513th Test Squadron, where he conducted flight test programs to evaluate and develop tactical aircraft weapons systems.
Col. Casper served as Director of Safety, Reliability, and Quality Assurance at the NASA Johnson Space Center, where he was responsible for all safety, reliability and quality activities for JSC’s human spaceflight programs, including the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle, Space Launch Initiative, and Crew Return Vehicles.

My 4th great grandfather was John Casper Losey Sr., born in Germany, and whom I have read in some of these posts may have been a Hessian soldier who had deserted around 1789.
Maybe my John Casper Losey was not in that list, but I surely would love to find out about him.
