  J. C. Beaglehole
John Beaglehole was born in Wellington (New Zealand) in 1901 and graduated in history from Victoria University College (as the University then was) in 1924.
John Beaglehole's principal scholarly achievement, for which he was awarded the Order of Merit, was his work on Captain James Cook and the exploration of the Pacific.
Although most of Beaglehole's scholarly career was devoted to Cook and the allied topic of Pacific exploration it was not his sole concern.

It may be presumptuous to attempt to summarize all that Beaglehole has written on Cook as a commander/governor of men, but the attempt will be made.
Beaglehole's remarks on the floggings that Cook ordered, remained the only attempted analysis of Cook's rate of flogging that I am aware of, until Greg Dening produced his table in 1992.
In contradistinction to Bligh, Beaglehole notes Cook's lack of vanity, his "scrupulous" rewriting of reports to the Admiralty on officers, so that they were not denigrated or humiliated.

Professor John Cawte Beaglehole OM CMG (June 13, 1901–October 10, 1971) was born in Wellington, New Zealand.
After graduating from Victoria University College New Zealand, he gained a PhD at the London School of Economics, where he was a student of Harold Laski.
After his doctoral studies he was a historian based mainly at Victoria where he was Professor of British Commomwealth History.
