Topic: John Chalkhill

  Izaak Walton - LoveToKnow 1911
It was probably as an angler that he made the acquaintance of Sir Henry Wotton, but it is clear that Walton had more than a love of fishing and a humorous temper to recommend him to the friendship of the accomplished ambassador.
Their lives were evidently written with loving pains, in the same leisurely fashion as his Angler, and like it are of value less as exact knowledge than as harmonious and complete pictures of character.
Walton also rendered affectionate service to the memory of his friends Sir John Skeffington and John Chalkhill, editing with prefatory notices Skeffington's Hero of Lorenzo in 1652 and Chalkhill's Thealma and Clearchus a few months before his own death in 1683.

An Elizabeth C., placed in the Abbey of Barking by John of Gaunt, was probably his daughter In person C. was inclined to corpulence, “no poppet to embrace,” of fair complexion with “a beard the colour of ripe wheat,” an “elvish” expression, and an eye downcast and meditative.

John Chalkhill ranks as one of the more enigmatic writers in English literary history.
In 1958, P. Croft established that Chalkhill was born around 1595 (and thus could not have known Spenser), was buried in 1642, and was the author of poems and letters owned by a family in Derbyshire.
This volume demonstrates Chalkhill's versatility and wit, marking him as an accomplished writer during the period between the Metaphysicals and the mature Milton.

Introduction to the Compleat Angler eBook
The poem is attributed to John Chalkhill, a Fellow of Winchester College, who died, a man of eighty, in 1679.
Probably the attribution is right: Chalkhill’s tomb commemorates a man after Walton’s own heart, but some have assigned the volume to Walton himself.
Chalkhill is described, on the title-page, as ‘an acquaintant and friend of Edmund Spencer,’ which is impossible.

Thealma and Clearchus. : CHALKHILL, (John)
Written long since, by John Chalkhill, Esq; An Acquaintant and Friend of Edmund Spencer.
He was born about 1595 in Middlesex (which despite the claim on the title that he was an "Acquaintant and Friend of Edmund Spenser" is only four years before Spenser's death), attended Trinity College, Cambridge (an older contemporary was the poet George Herbert), and died in 1642.
This volume is prefaced an optimistic poem addressed to Walton by Thomas Flatman ("As long as Chalkhill's venerable Name, / With humble emulation shall inflame / Ages to come, and swell the Rolls of Fame:"), and ends, unfinished, with the note "And here the Author dy'd, and I hope the Reader will be sorry".

And it is certain that Peter, James, and John made converts among the twelve, for 'the greater number of them were found together, fishing, by Jesus after His Resurrection.' That Amos was 'a good-natured, plain fisherman,' only Walton had faith enough to believe.

Some plausibility is lent to this notion by the fact that Walton speaks of the author with so much reticence and reserve in his preface to the volume, and also that in introducing two of Chalkhill's songs into the "Complete Angler," he does not bestow on them the customary words of commendation.
The preface to Sir John Skeffington's Heroe of Lorenzo had for two centuries lain forgotten, and escaped the notice of Walton's biographers, till in 1852 it was discovered by Dr. Bliss of Oxford, and communicated by him to the late William Pickering.
Speaking of Hugh Peters and John Lilbourn, the writer says:--"Their turbulent lives and uncomfortable deaths are not I hope yet worn out of the memory of many.

The few events in the long life of Izaak Walton have been carefully investigated by Sir Harris Nicolas.
On Nov. 25, 1645, Walton probably wrote, though John Marriott signed, an Address to the Reader, printed, in 1646, with Quarles’s Shepherd’s Eclogues.
