By the end of the 1960s, Chamberlain had replaced his signature materials initially with galvanized steel, then with urethane foam and mineral-coated Plexiglas, and finally with aluminum foil, all in the guise of pristine raw material that was variously wadded, compacted, and compressed according to its individual structural properties.
John Chamberlain himself states that he felt intuitively connected to the Abstract Expressionists; he especially admired Willem de Kooning's dexterous compositional complexities and Franz Kline's muscular speed and power.

One of Chamberlain's younger brothers, Thomas Chamberlain, was also an officer of the 20th Maine, and another, John Chamberlain, traveled with the regiment as a member of the Christian Commission until appointed as a chaplain in another Maine Volunteer regiment.
Chamberlain left the army soon after the war ended, going back to his home state of Maine, and was elected and served as Governor of Maine for four one-year terms.
Chamberlain died of his lingering wartime wounds in 1914 at Portland, Maine, age 85, and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Brunswick, Maine.

His best-known works are the baroque, abstract sculptures he created from the discarded chassis of automobiles, in which he assembled the parts freely and used the original colors in his compositions.
Born in Rochester, Ind., Chamberlain studied sculpture at the Museum School of the Chicago Art Institute for two years and then attended Black Mountain College, North Carolina (1955-56), where he was exposed to the vanguard theories of both artists and poets.
Chamberlain has exhibited widely, including one-man shows in New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and London, and has been included in important international exhibitions.
