Chapman, whose older sister was named after her mother, was a middle child for only a few days; his younger brother, Nathaniel Jr.
To the Indians of his time, Chapman was seen as a medicine man. He was knowledgeable in the use of herbs with curative powers -- such as catnip, rattlesnake weed, horehounds and pennyroyal.
Chapman was buried in what is now known as Johnny Appleseed Park in Fort Wayne, Ind., and honored with a boulder memorial at the city's Swinney Park.
