On 16 September 1916 at Courcelette, France, during a bombing attack, Private Kerr was acting as bayonet man and noting that bombs were running short, he ran along the parados under heavy fire until he was in close contact with the enemy when he opened fire at point-blank range, inflicting heavy losses.
Earlier, Private Kerr's fingers had been blown off, but he did not have his wound dressed until he and two other men had escorted the prisoners back under fire and reported for duty.

John Chipman Kerr was then awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the action -- the regiment's first VC.
Cecil John Kinross won the regiment's second VC by charging a machine gun blocking the unit's advance.
Numerous prisoners were taken and as the Germans streamed out on to the flats behind the feature, C Company under Maj. John Dougan, MC, called the artillery down on the enemy, thus giving them the treatment that they had expected to hand out to our next attacking force.

John Kerr earned his VC Sept. 16, 1916, while serving with the Edmonton 49th Bn.
Kerr and his squad closed in and cornered the Germans who thought they were surrounded.
On Aug. 6, 1918, he was given a hero’s welcome at Edmonton where he and his British bride were greeted by the lieutenant-governor, the premier, cabinet ministers and city politicians and presented with $700 in gold.

Private John Chipman Kerr, a homesteader from Peace River who had walked 80 kilometres through the snow in December 1915 to the railhead so he could enlist, put on an astonishing display of courage that won him the Victoria Cross.
With one finger already blown off by a German hand grenade explosion, Kerr climbed to the parapet of the trench and ran down it shooting anybody who got in his way.
Kerr, in an act of truly heroic proportions, single-handed effected the surrender of sixty-two German soldiers.

Ian is the grandson of John Chipman Kerr VC for which Mount Kerr in the Victoria Cross Range is named.
John Trevers Cornwell was a fifteen year old member of a gun crew aboard HMS Chester, a Royal Navy cruiser which was severely damaged during the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
In a letter to John Cornwell's mother, Captain Lawson of the Chester described the "Boy Hero of the Battle of Jutland's," actions when he wrote, "The wounds which resulted in his death were received in the first few minutes of the action.

On 27th September 1918 at Bourlon Wood, France, Lieutenant Kerr acted with conspicuous bravery and leadership during operations, giving timely support by outflanking a machine-gun which was impeding the advance.
Earlier in the action, Private Kerr's fingers had been blown off, but didn't stop to have his wounds dressed until he and two others had escorted the prisoners back, still under heavy fire, before reporting for duty.
Lieutenant Kerr made a dash at one of the gateways with a some dismounted men and forced an entrance.

Born in Fox River, Nova Scotia, Kerr was serving with the 49th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, at Courcelette, France, on September 16, 1916.
Although wounded, Kerr moved along the trench in full view of the enemy.
After tossing grenades and firing his rifle at the enemy beneath him, Kerr chased his victims into their dug-out.

Born in 1894, Kerr was an infantryman in the Canadian Corps when he won the Military Medal in June, 1916, for taking command of his platoon and directing it with skill when both the commanding officer and sergeant were killed during intense action.
While recovering from his wounds, Kerr left his sickbed and rejoined his battalion when he learned that it would be part of an attack on the Canal du Nord and Bourlon Wood.
Mount Kerr, named after John Chipman Kerr who was awarded the Victoria Cross during the battle of the Somme, has an extra inscription.

JOHN CHIPMAN (B.A., and M.A., McGill University; Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University) was a guest of the Cowles Commission, 1950–51, while holding a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago.
JOHN GURLAND (M.A. in mathematics, University of Toronto, 1942; Ph.D. in mathematical statistics, University of California, 1948) was appointed assistant professor in September, 1949, jointly in the Cowles Commission and in the Committee on Statistics of the University of Chicago.
Prior to his association with the Commission he was successively Fletcher Scholar, Kerr Scholar, and Whitcomb Scholar in economics and statistics at Reed College, 1938–42; was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, 1942; and was graduate resident scholar in economics, 1942–43, and on leave from university fellowship, 1943–46, Columbia University.

"There should be a highway or some recognition for Victoria Cross winner Chip Kerr, who was born and raised in Fox River," said Ruth Allen, a former District 10 councillor and spokeswoman for the association.
John Chipman Kerr was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1916 for singlehandedly capturing 62 enemy soldiers in France.
Kerr, who lived in Alberta and British Columbia, has a mountain peak and park named in his honour.

It is an honour today to gather with you all as we formally name Chip Kerr park in remembrance and respect of John Chipman “Chip” Kerr who was awarded the Victoria Cross on May 2, 1917 by King George V for his outstanding courage and valour with the 49th Edmonton Regiment at Courcelette France.
Such a man was Chip Kerr, he saw an opportunity, he grasped it and he moved into a wholly new order of living in that seemingly “split second” decision to act.
In assisting to unveil the dedication plaque we remember with honour and respect John Chipman “Chip” Kerr and we thank the members of the Kerr family for being with us on this day of honour and respect.

Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House recognize the bravery and honour displayed by Private John Chipman Kerr and by all Canadian war veterans in defending our country and preserving our freedom.
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House join the college in commending the achievements of Cumberland businessman John Bragg and thank him for his tremendous economic contributions to Cumberland County and Nova Scotia as a whole.
