Hal was a big fan of John Cipollina, and was a friend of the Cipollina family.
When John died, Hal joined forces with John's sister Antonia, his manager and friend, Steve Keyser, along with talented cinematographer Jesse Block, and film editor Jim Draper, to produce "John Cipollina: Electric Guitarslinger" a video biography of his life.
So John epoxied the spring to the bar and glued a nickel in the hole where the spring sat (it had to be a Buffalo nickel - don't ask me why - this was John - only HE knew).

On some of the songs John contributes more than on others bu the overall impression is one of a band playing and having fun.
I very much enjoyed this album, as a historical record, as pieces of John Cipollina playing, as a pice of the great Bay area musical legacy and just as listening to a rock'n'roll band.

Nick Gravenites relates that women would go to John’s hotel room and Nick would check in on them at 1AM… they would be talking.
At 7AM, John would see them to the door… they thought they were going for a romantic interlude, but John just treated them as fans.
It seems John was very likeable, that he would speak with anyone who approached him and give them his full attention, and that he was a bit of a joker.

I knew a woman in the 1980s who was obsessed with John, and used to go to Gravenites/Cipollina shows at the Chi Chi in SF to try to evangelize to him about Nichiren Shosu Buddhism (the "nam myoho renge kyo" deal), and she said he was always really lovely and kind to her.
John's response was to play bits of Link's hits ("Rumble," "Rawhide," et al.) and say "man, I got all of that stuff from you!" He really struck me as a genuinely humble person, as compared to the deflecting-praise-because-of-negative-self-concept sort of thing that Garcia seemed to do so much.
I was lucky enough to see John Cipollina play two (or was it three)nights in a row at the Round House in London's Chalk Farm district, in the late seventies I think.

Turns out they could play their instruments - guitarists John Cipollina and Gary Duncan sound like they had at least as much raw talent as their counterparts from the Airplane, Dead, and Holding Company; and drummer Greg Elmore was occasionally wild, but entertaining.
Both Hopkins and Cipollina have since passed away, and there's a John Cipollina memorial web site with information on his many exploits.
The band was in bad shape at this point, with Cipollina, Freiberg and Hopkins all being absent - Freiberg had migrated to the quickly splintering Jefferson Airplane (which soon became the Starship), and Hopkins was still heavily involved with the Rolling Stones, the Who, and assorted session projects.

David, I only got to hear John play late in his career with Nick, and since it was essentially a blues gig, I know I didn't see anything like the full scope of his style.
Obviously, he was influenced by Link Wray, as he often stated, though I have a hard time hearing anything but John, himself, when I listen to his playing.
The thing that keeps coming to my mind is, "like ringin' a bell." Just that his sound was so much a clarion, in terms of projection as well as the resonance of it.

John was using crutches, had an oxygen tank with him - but still sneaked off to the stairwells to smoke an unfiltered Lucky Strike.
