Colborne’s arrival prompted unusual expectations of redress of grievances and of a liberal conduct that must strain his natural conservatism and soldierly concepts of constitutional limitation and duty.
Colborne treated the assembly as a debating group, and expressed concern over the Legislative Council’s frequent intransigence in blocking strongly supported assembly measures, but he was not ready to strengthen the assembly itself.
Colborne felt that Glenelg appointed him to the post to indicate his respect for him despite his having had to remove him from Upper Canada and because he was an experienced military leader whose presence in Lower Canada might encourage moderation and discourage civil disorder.

Furthermore, if John Fraser of the Field Train Dept., was born in Quebec and/or was a son of Captain (later Judge) John Fraser, he would have had no reason to be crossing the ocean to visit his parents in 1819, as indicated in the book on the families of Yamachiche.

Saved from the wrecker's ball by a group of community-minded women in 1925, Colborne Lodge was most recently restored in the 1960s by the Toronto Historical Board, which today operates the year-round interpretive center as"a furnished museum for the city." When the curtain rises, John Darcus, a recently arrived resident of Peterborough, founder of the Peterborough Backwoodsman and Sentinel, and a member of the 7th Provisional Battalion of Peterborough militia force, stumbles in to Dr. John Gilchrist's general store in Keene.
Gilchrist catches Darcus in a lie, bringing up the fact that as a magistrate and clerk of the Colborne District council he had forged 17 settlers' names on certificates to the effect that they had killed wolves and that Darcus had collected the bounty of £1 on each certificate.

John Howard, one of Toronto’s first architects as well as a City Engineer and Surveyor, built Colborne Lodge in 1837 which still contains many original furnishings, artifacts, and some of his own watercolours depicting images of early Toronto.
Colborne Lodge is about 200 m up the hill immediately on the right-hand side of the road.

The Howards' relationship seems to have been incomplete: John engaged in a long-term clandestine relationship with another woman, Mary Williams, with whom he had three children, whereas he and Jemima had none.
Yet during Jemima's final illness - with cancer - John did his utmost to find a cure and to care for her, and seems to have grieved her loss with deep sincerity.

This land or estate was situated in the flatlands or swamps along the west side of what is now the Coldwater Road and form the nature of the soil when it was formerly owned by Sir John Colborne, Governor-General at that time, he called it "Clayfields," which name has remained with the property ever since.
Other pioneers who came about this same time from Drummond Island were William Rawson, Joseph Craddock and John Borland, Joseph Craddock was the son of a British lieutenant who had married a native woman, and settling here was given 50 acres of land as his grant from the Crown.

He was natural soldier with talent and no patronage Colborne enlisted as an ensign in the 20th regiment in 1794 and won every step without purchase.
At Waterloo Colborne was again commanding the 52nd who were brigaded with the 71st and 95th regiments in Lord Hill's Division on the British Extreme right (around Hougomount).
There was some confusion here and the 2nd division (Colborne's) ended up under extreme fire and in peril from the French cavalry who almost immediately wiped out three battalions and were pushing into the rear of the army, Cole's 4th Division arrived in the nick of time to save them.
