John Donald Cordwell was born in 1920 in London, England.
Cordwell's work experience began in the London office of Sir Herbert Baker (1936-40), followed by jobs with Sir Howard Robertson (1945-47) and in the office of Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew (1947-50).
In that year Cordwell took a job with PACE Associates, but soon left that position to direct the activities of the Chicago Plan Commission (1952-56).

Cordwell may be remembered as one of the original American anthropologists to pursue and advocate the combination of art history and ethnography for the purpose of studying the creative person, a practice that has since spread as a valid and popular topic in the discipline of anthropology.
Cordwell mentioned reading the book, "Digging in the Yucatan," by archaeologist Ann Axtell Morris, when she was a young girl, but no doubt her father's film work in these areas also sparked her original interest in archaeology and Mayan art and culture.
Cordwell returned to Nigeria a third time in 1988, but, as she put it, "the Ibo were fomenting again." General Ibrahim Babangida had overthrown the previous military government in 1985, and the situation was still very tense.

 Cordwell's Book
Of course, John Cordwell was not an Earl and there is no Muffington except in a foul tale or two, but being both very British and not-an-earl-of-anything was also part of the book of Cordwell: that special creation, his life, his tale, a tale he tinkered all the time.
Like Sir John of the Histories, Cordwell had been, in his time, a warrior -- a pain in the ass to those he fought as well as the side he served -- an artisan, a lover, a teacher, a wise man and a rogue.

But surprisingly, after 19 years of running the Red Lion, Cordwell hasn’t had many first-hand encounters with the spirits thought to dwell in the Lincoln Park building, which he says was built in the 1880s and has served as a gambling house and apartment building, among other things.
However, Cordwell has had his share of paranormal hints, such as hearing furniture move around on the second floor when no one is present.
Cordwell, however, had a much spookier experience several years ago when visiting the spot with a local reporter and Chicago haunt historian/Chicago Supernatural Tours owner Richard Crowe.
