I really don't think rock n' roll should sell their songs for commercial use, I think it takes whatever meaning the music has either in the content itself or to the fans, when used in commercials is trivialized and subsumes the artists meaning to the corporate entity.
John Cougar Mellencamp has never really had a problem rationalizing things for corporations hence the name change early in his career because some executive didn't think they could sell Mellencamp.

 John Cougar Mellencamp
"John Mellencamp" (born October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana) is an American singer and songwriter, known for a long and successful recording and performing career highlighted by a series of 1980s hits, including "Jack and Diane", and by his role in the Farm Aid charity event.
With a major hit under his belt, Mellencamp insisted on changing his billing to "John Cougar Mellencamp" (compromising by keeping the stage name as well as his true last name) for the 1983 follow-up, ''Uh-Huh'', which was another top-10 hit and spawned several hit singles, including the vivid Americana of "Pink Houses".

 John Cougar Mellencamp
John Mellencamp made his entrance into the local music scene at the age of 14, and continued to perform with a variety of bands (such as the rock/R&B combo Crepe Soul) throughout his teen years.
It wasn't until his second attempt at the U.S. market, John Cougar, surfaced in 1979 that a presence on the all-important music charts was established, both through his own recording of the song I Need A Lover and a cover version included on the debut album by Pat Benatar.
By this time his down-homey image was being given constant display on the fledgling MTV channel, a fact that helped both 1983's Uh-Huh (the first record on which he reclaimed his birth name, although still keeping the "Cougar" as a middle name) and 1985's Scarecrow (the first record to earn him significant critical notice).

Billboard.com - Discography (more) - John Cougar - American Fool
John Cougar's first albums were so bereaved of strong material that the lean swagger of American Fool came as a shock.
Cougar never wrote anything as catchy as this before, nor had his romantic vision of small-town America resonated like it did on "Jack and Diane," a minor and remarkably affecting sketch of dead-end romance.
These two songs are the only true keepers on American Fool, but the rest of the record works better than his previous material because his band is tighter than ever before, making his weaker moments convincing.

When John Cougar Mellencamp released 1985's SCARECROW, American farmers were taking a major hit from bank foreclosures and soaring interest rates that were destroying their way of life.
Elsewhere, Mellencamp mixed in commercially successful populist anthems like "Rain on the Scarecrow," and "Small Town." With SCARECROW's success, John Cougar Mellencamp became the public face of heartland rock and found himself joining forces with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to create the benefit organization Farm Aid.
