John Cunningham (June 28, 1897 - February 21, 1941) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 13 November 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Ancre (the final offensive of the Battle of the Somme), attacking from opposite Hebuterne the 31st Division was to seize the German trenches and form a defensive flank north of Serre.
Collecting all the bombs from the casualties Private Cunningham went on alone and when he had used up all the bombs he had he returned for a fresh supply and again went up the communication trench where he met a party of 10 Germans.

John Cunningham, born in Hall Street, Thurles, County Tipperary (October 22, 1890 - April 16, 1917) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 12 April 1917 at Bois-en-Hache, near Barlin, France, Corporal Cunningham was in command of a Lewis gun section which came under a very heavy enfilade fire.
Cunningham later died from the effects of his wounds near Barlin on April 16, 1917.

We have stayed several times in the City of Havana, on one occasion as a result of my wife's having been invited to a congress of English teachers.
We have been able to roam the city freely, taking as many pictures as we wanted, have visited people in their homes, have talked to people from all walks of life (except the military) and have learned of the complex society which is Cuba.
