Rockefeller himself retired from active business in 1895.

The business spirit seems to have always inhabited John D. Rockefeller: as a boy, he bought candy by the pound, divided it into small protions, then sold it at a tidy profit to his siblings.
John D. began to borrow heavily to expand the business (during all his career he benefited from a favorable credit rating with banks); however, for personal reasons, the Clarks (James joined Maurice as a partner in the early 1860s) distrusted the banks.

Rockefeller was born in Richford, N.Y., on July 8, 1839, and educated in the public schools of Cleveland, Ohio.
These were the Rockefeller Foundation; the General Education Board; the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University); and the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, established in 1918 and incorporated into the Rockefeller Foundation in 1929.
In early 1872 Rockefeller helped form the South Improvement Co., an association of the largest oil refiners in Cleveland, arranging with the railroads for substantial rebates on shipments by members of the association.
