DAVENPORT, JOHN [Davenport, John] 1597-1670, Puritan clergyman, one of the founders of New Haven, Conn., b.
Davenport was minister in New Haven and a powerful figure in the colony until he lost (1665) the bitter fight to prevent the union of New Haven colony and Connecticut.
John Davenport: 1918 - 2006: U. of C. athlete in '30s`All-around good fellow' co-captained the once-proud Maroons football team in 1939, the university's last gridiron squad for three decades.

Davenport preached under the branches of a large oak on "The Temptations of the Wilderness." In June of the following year "all the free planters" met in 8 barn for the purpose of holding a constitutional assembly.
Davenport died of apoplexy soon after it began, and was buried in the tomb of his friend, John Cotton.
Davenport continued with this parish until his death, and lies buried near Pennington, N.J. Whitefield speaks of him as "a sweet, pious soul."--John, son of Abraham, lawyer, born in Stamford, Connecticut, 16 January 1752; died there, 28 November 1830, was graduated at Yale in 1770, and was a tutor there during 1773-'4.

Born 1715 in Stamford, Connecticut Abraham Davenport was the son of John Davenport, who replaced John Bishop as minister of the Stamford church and Elizabeth (Morris) Maltby, John’s second wife.

Whereas John Hinkson the explorer entered into general history in April, 1775, his reputation as a legendary Indian fighter and frontiersman was forged in June, 1780, when the British and Indians swept down upon and captured two frontier outposts in Kentucky.

While in Boston Davenport and Eaton had learned of the "rich and goodly" meadows of the Quinnipiac, an Algonkian word meaning "Long Water Land." Excited about the prospects of a splendid harbor, in August of 1637 Eaton and a handful of men set sail to the south to examine the territory.
For Davenport it marked the end of his dream for an "Independent Kingdom of Christ." He had unsuccessfully opposed the absorption of New Haven into Connecticut, as prescribed by the Charter of 1662.
In 1661, barely a step ahead of their pursuers, Whalley and Goffe were hidden by John Davenport in a cave atop New Havenís West Rock.

Identification of William Davenport as an Uncle and James Davenport as a brother solidifies definition of structure of the family of Isaac Davenport, late of Granville County, NC, Decd.
Among the papers of the estate was a receipt from David Davenport of Greenville County for reimbursement of his travelling expenses to Charleston in 1801, and a receipt from Isaac Davenport for his attendance as a witness in the suit of William Davenport vs. Mary Davenport in 1803.
