Bio: While J.D. Souther may have made his biggest impact on the country-rock sound behind the scenes or in a supporting role to some of the bigger pop names of the '70s, he had an impressive and critically acclaimed series of solo albums that have unfortunately all but disappeared from music fans' radar.
He was in a band called John David and the Senders (also known as the Cinders) while in high school, later relocating to Los Angeles.
Souther's connections with Frey would prove fruitful later, collaborating on some of the Eagles' biggest hit songs like "Best of My Love," "Heartache Tonight," and "New Kid in Town." Previous to forming the Eagles, Frey had also played in Linda Ronstadt's band; their collaboration would lead to a long-term working partnership between Souther and Ronstadt.

 JD Souther - Goldmine
John David Souther is a wary man. For most of his 30-year career the Los Angeles-based songwriter and performer, whose musical compeers include The Eagles, Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt, has resolutely shunned the spotlight his friends have basked in.
Souther’s girlfriend at the time, Linda Ronstadt, needed a backing band, and he encouraged Frey to go on the road with her; that band became the Eagles.
In the 1970s one of the paradoxes of J.D. Souther was that the sensitive angst-ridden ballad writer was depicted by the press as “a rock and roll ass-hole who ate newsmen for breakfast.” Nowadays his bark is worse than his bite and he has mellowed.

Souther's first solo album, which coincided with the release of the first Eagles album, but offers a much more mature and poetic take on the early 70's Southern California scene, a kind of inward-looking alternative to the Eagles' evolving wide-screen lyricism.
Souther is more sharp-edged and less compromising, even though the escapism theme is just as present here as it is in the work of his more privileged Troubadour peers.

 Terence Boylan Biography
John Lennon, in an interview with Penny Nichols in London, called The Appletree Theatre one of his favorite new albums, Time Magazine lauded the Boylans' sense of humor, and Phillip Proctor acknowledged their influence on his own group, The Firesign Theatre.
John Boylan was fast gaining a reputation as one of LA’s hottest young record producers, and was at that time rehearsing Linda Ronstadt with a new band he had assembled to back her on a coming tour.
He actually wound up recording two albums, one an edgy and raucus take-off on the current punk rock movement, and the other a melodic and more sophisticated exploration of the genre he had successfully mined on the first album - heavily textured, mid-tempo songs with fresh, angular lyrics and seductive harmonies.

Under the direction of new member Gram Parsons, the Byrds tackled country music on their 1968 album =Sweetheart of the Rodeo.= Parsons proved to be the guiding force in country-rock, as his solo records and albums with the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Byrds provided the blueprint for country-rock.
The performance was immortalized on countless bootleg albums (an official release finally surfaced in 1998), and it indicates the intensity of Dylan in the middle of 1966.
The result was an album that reflected the cultural and political turmoil of the late '60s in a way that emphasized the tragedy inherent in the conflicts.

Their producer, Dickson, suggested Hillman for the bass position; although he had never picked up the instrument before, thanks to his bluegrass background he was able to quickly develop his own unique, melodic performance style.
However, Parsons' mastery of country soon became the sessions' dominant focus, much to Hillman's delight, and the album the Byrds ultimately recorded, 1968's Sweetheart of the Rodeo, became the blueprint for all country-rock efforts released in its wake.
In 1974, Hillman teamed with singer/songwriters John David Souther and Richie Furay to form Souther Hillman Furay; after recording two LPs with the trio, Hillman issued a pair of solo albums, 1976's Slippin' Away and 1977's Clear Sailin'.
