 RESOLVING BLURRED FAUNAS: BIOSTRATIGRAPHY IN JOHN DAY FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT
A system of "cyclic prospecting" begun in 1984 at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (JODA) has resulted in the salvaging of thousands of specimens that would have been lost to weathering or inadequate data recording (Fremd, 1992a).
Work outside the national monument was begun with cooperative agreement with the BLM (Hanson and Allen, 1988, Fremd, 1989, 1992b); this has since grown to include work in the other occurrences of the strata in the state.
The earliest canids in the John Day Formation are represented by the simultaneous occurrence of the sister-species "Cormocyon" lemur and "C." latidens in strata equivalent to the upper Brule Formation (Whitneyan) of the northern Great Plains.

Physical Features The national significance of the monument lies in the geological and palaeontological resources of the John Day River basin.
*Astragalus diaphanus (John Day milkvetch) - located on low hills by the John Day River in the Sheep Rock unit; flowers are white with a purple tinge, leaves are broad and oval; several patches were found.
Rocky Mountain mule deer, coyotes, rodents, bobcats, mink, beaver, muskrat and raccoon all inhabit the Monument.
