Update: My respect for Derbyshire was high before (with the very definite caveats mentioned), but has somewhat increased over the least two years or so as he seems to be showing signs of mellowing.
Derbyshire has of course written other articles on various subjects since this date.
This is, I think, a fair rebuttle to the criticism of Derbyshire as "obssessed" with this subject (though on the other hand 3 percent of an author's output is a non-negligible amount).
