John Dudley was the eldest son of Edmund Dudley, Henry VII's chief minister, whom Henry VIII executed, with his fellow-lawyer and associate Empson, as soon as he came to the throne.
John Dudley's origins were noble; his paternal grandfather was a Knight of the Garter and Steward to Henry V; his mother, Elizabeth de Lisle, was a descendant of Warwick, the King-Maker.
In Mary's case, there was good reason, for she and Northumberland were natural enemies; yet even when he stood at the head of the state (although he refused all official positions) as the "thunderbolt and terror of the Papists" and the King's right hand, Jane appears to have hated him.

Dudley was created Duke of Northumberland in 1550 and two years later disposed of his rival, Seymour, by having him tried and executed on false charges.
John Dudley and Henry Grey, the Duke of Suffolk, had a plan—have John's son Guilford marry Henry's daughter Jane, and place Jane on the throne of England before Mary had a chance to claim it (Jane was Mary's cousin, so there was some validity to it–although Mary was rightfully the successor).

Edmund Dudley pledged his loyalty to the first Tudor, Henry VII (1456–1509), and after the king's death was himself executed for his zealous prosecution of the king's unpopular policies.
Yet at the opposite extreme of the spectrum, Edmund Dudley was instrumental in establishing the financial basis of the Tudor dynasty, while John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, led victorious armies, laid the foundations of the Royal Navy, ruled as uncrowned king, and almost landed on the throne.
His successor, Sir Robert Dudley, scholar, adventurer, and courtier, was one of the Queen’s most audacious seadogs in the closing years of her reign, but fell foul of James I. A new and important interpretation of the Tudor service nobility emerges in which John Dudley is seen not merely as an overmighty subject and kingmaker, but first and foremost as a servant of the English Crown.
