Ensign Cunningham failed to rally from injuries suffered in the crash of a Douglas Dauntless dive bomber last Wednesday, and died late Saturday.
He believes Ensign Cunningham deliberately crashed the falling plane into a small grove of pine trees to avoid a school and homes nearby.
After plowing through the trees the Dauntless came to rest several feet above the ground with the engine pushed back into the cockpit, trapping the pilot.
