Tension myositis syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sarno's theories and management plan for back pain and other TMS equivalents are not widely accepted by the conventional medical community, but Sarno claims to have a high rate of success at the Howard A. Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University Medical Center.
Sarno claims that the underlying cause of the pain is the mind's defense mechanism against unconscious mental stress it does not want to cope with, or even directly confront, emotions such as anger, anxiety and narcissistic rage.
Sarno's TMS success stories, which, along with those of his colleagues who use this approach, [2] now number in the tens of thousands, could be due to either the placebo effect or the natural ebb and flow of back pain.

To Be or Not to Be Pain Free: The Mindbody Syndrome...why I wrote the book.
John E. Sarno, MD, is a pivotal figure in the arena of pain management because of his hotly debated approach to the diagnosis and management of back pain.
Sarno, Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University School of Medicine, and Attending Physician at The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center, is the author of 3 books that postulate the theory that most back pain is triggered by psychological origins instead of by a physiological defect.
Sarno: When I started to look into it, I found that large numbers of people in whom the pain was being attributed to some structural abnormality actually had a totally different disorder.

The Mind Body Prescription : Healing the Body, Healing the Pain
Dr. John Sarno caused quite a ruckus back in 1990 when he suggested that back pain is all in the head.
Sarno walks through the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders, lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based, and offers a basic program for overcoming psychosomatic pain and illness.
While Sarno's ideas seem radical, they were commonly implemented earlier in the 20th century, when psychoanalysis was at its peak of popularity, and they promise to become more accepted in our current era of alternative medical therapies and anger management.

Book Review - The Mindbody Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain, by John E. Sarno, M.D.
Sarno's thesis is quite different from Janov's in that the cure to Sarno's Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) is simply to come to realize that the origin of the pain is from the unconscious mind and not from any bodily abnormality.
Sarno takes issue with the medical profession since most physicians do not accept that the primary cause of many such chronic pain syndromes are psychological problems.
Sarno claims the rate of "cure" is between 90 and 95 per cent and yet his practice is comprised mostly of sufferers who have gone to him as a last resort -- those who have been suffering for decades.

Conscious Choice: Pain's Dirty Little Secret: The Unconscious Connection
Sarno says, in short, that pain (like the other disorders on his list) often has a deep dark secret.
I used to ask chronic pain patients "Would you rather have a physically based pain or a psychologically caused pain?" The almost universal answer was a physical pain, based generally on fear of shame and weakness.
The "right" answer, though, was psychogenic pain, since these disorders, like Dr. Sarno’s TMS, can be cured completely by counseling and psychological interventions, without drugs or surgery, while hard-core physical pain often can be managed only partially, with the usual medical interventions.

 Healing Back Pain Audio Book
According to Dr. Sarno, TMS is the predominant cause of back and shoulder pain in people of all ages.
Although its origins are unknown, Sarno has discovered through years of clinical studies that TMS is a physiologic alteration in the muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments that make up the postural muscles--the neck, entire back, and buttocks--of the body.
According to Dr. Sarno, the body is tricked into expressing this unspoken pain by the unconscious mind, causing the conscious mind to recognize it but without the ability to heal it.

The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno's long and successful career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer.
In Dr. Sarno's view, the crucial interaction between the generally reasonable, rational, ethical, and moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind appears to be the basis for mindbody disorders.
Sarno believes that the failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mindbody disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States.
