Evatt Foundation: Publication: Vale Christopher Hill - 11 March 2003
Hill's contribution, which was subsequently published alone, was a no-holds-barred assertion of the revolutionary nature of England between 1640 and 1660, and an assault on the traditional presentation of these years as an aberration in the stately continuity of English history.
Hill always argued that the connection between leaving the CP and his wider fame was post-hoc rather than propter-hoc, and it is certainly true that 1956-57 caused no revolution (let alone a counter-revolution) in his analysis of the English revolution.

Hill saw the ideals and aspirations of people in the 17th century as basically religious, and though his own faith was in humanity rather than in God, he came to put Puritanism at the centre of his work, the complex and paradoxical revolutionary force of its day.
Hill and his family continued to live in Northmoor Road and part of the Master’s Lodgings became undergraduate rooms; most of the privileges and perquisities of the mastership were discarded and the effective powers of Fellows and college officers were expanded.
Hill’s view was that “the English revolution of 1640-1660 was a great social movement like the French Revolution of 1789”, and he said that the absence of a band of dedicated revolutionaries did not mean that there was no revolution.

The tree was planted by a youthful couple as a memorial of their engagement, and when not long afterwards, in 1809, the engagement was discontinued, and the memorial was no longer prized by the lady in whose garden it had been planted, she one day pulled it up and threw it into the street.
