John Redmond was born in County Wexford in Ireland in 1856.

As party whip he rendered great service to the Irish members by his thorough grasp of the procedure of the House.
At the time of the rupture of the Irish party consequent on the Parnell scandals, Redmond was the most eloquent member of the minority who continued to recognize his leadership, and in 1891 he became the accredited leader of the Parnellites.

When the Liberals came to power in Britain in 1905, Redmond had no choice but to support them even though the policy they then advocated was one of “devolution” or merely administrative Home Rule for Ireland.
In the ensuing crisis caused by the militant opposition to the bill in Northern Ireland, Redmond reluctantly gave his support to the Irish Volunteer movement, a military organization raised to counter the threat of the newly formed Ulster Volunteers.
Redmond turned down a cabinet post in the coalition government of 1915.

Redmond is a name of Norman origin: the first in Ireland was Alexander Raymond, who was of the same stock as Raymond le Gros, one of the best known of the Anglo-Norman invaders.
Two were Wexford rebels in 1798: Rev. John Redmond and Michael Redmond; and they four Redmonds, notably Chevalier Gabriel Redmond (1713-1789), who served with distinction on the Continent with the Irish Brigade were all of Wexford families.
In the present century John Edward Redmond (1855-12918), a Co. Wexford landlord, was leader of the Irish Party in the British House of Commons up to its extinction on the rise of Sinn Fein, and his brother, William Redmond (1861-1917)_, killed in the first Great War, was also a leading member of that party.

KENDRICK, THOMAS J., a well known, popular and influential citizen of Jacksonville, Morgan County, Ill., was born January 11, 1869, at Ferns, County Wexford, Ireland, the son of John and Kate (Redmond) Kendrick, both of whom were natives of that county-the former born in 1830, and the latter in 1837.
The mother, who died in 1879, was a second-cousin of John Edward Redmond, the celebrated Irish leader.

After the Parnell divorce scandal, Dillon led the anti-Parnell faction until the Nationalist party was reunited (1900) under the leadership of John Redmond.
During World War I, Dillon incurred the enmity of Sinn Fein by encouraging military recruiting in Ireland in spite of his opposition to conscription.
He succeeded (1918) Redmond in the leadership of the Nationalist party, but his career came to an end after the Sinn FEin victory in the 1918 election.
