classical music - andante - sir john eliot gardiner's electrifying haydn
The English Baroque Soloists don't often perform in England anymore in these financially difficult times, and in recent years their founder and director, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, has spent more time guest-conducting Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bruckner and Stravinsky (although the year 2000 was, of course, an exception to the rule, with the notorious Bach Cantata Pilgrimage).
In fact, the 44th Symphony is full of congeniality and warmth underneath its tumultuous exterior, and Gardiner presented a moulded performance that was notable for the technical security of the horns — a rarity in many period-instrument concerts — and the mastery of a phenomenal violin section in the dazzling finale.
Gardiner's quartet of soloists was fine, although at times they were slightly obscured by the ecstatic orchestral and choral entries surrounding them — after all, Gardiner's famously full-blooded approach occasionally has its risks as well as its handsome dividends.

Gardiner has plans to hand "some of the recordings to colleges of music and university departments as an archival document of the project", but he is also casting his line into commercial waters to see whether a wider audience will bite.
Gardiner's trump card, however, could well be the association of the discs with the original concert pilgrimage, which, as he says, "was a way of performing the cantatas in a coherent manner.

Gardiner’s solution was simple: study the original autographed scores or printed first editions; make scholarly conclusions as to what Beethoven’s actual intentions were; and perform the music on "period" instruments according to those historical conclusions.

The best part for me is particularly Gardiner's reinterpretation of the meter which gives one a far greater sense of impending change in pieces such as his 3rd, 5th, and 9th.
Gardiner's orchestra is also smaller wich diminishes the volume but having a modern orchestra of 300+ members is simply overkill for such pieces and the results are worst in muffling the strings than Gardiner's lack of punch with traditional strings and orchestra size.
I think Gardiner's interpretations are just fine despite their defects as many of its other contenders have problems of their own which, in my opinion, are worst than those of Gardiner's.

Gardiner's performance is notable for its intensity and fervour (not mere ferocity) and for the superb singing of his choir: splendidly firm and secure attacks and phrasing, always with fine tonal quality, meticulous attention to dynamic nuances, and alertness to verbal meaning and nuance.
The solo baritone is a real find: an admirably focused voice with cleanly projected words and sensitive tonal gradations: if the soprano, pure-voiced and consoling, seems slightly less distinguished, it may be that she is set a trifle too far from the microphone.
In the past Gardiner has sometimes been accused of minimizing the spiritual quality of religious works: that can certainly not be said of this outstanding performance.
