For eighteen months, John L. Rotundo and Don Ericson braved the test of war at its most bloody and most raw, specializing in ambushing the enemy and fighting jungle guerillas using their own tactics.
I can assure John that when we went out during that time the teams that I went out with were making contact.
John looks familiar to me from the picture in the book, I also had the utmost respect for the guys in Charlie Co. and had no problem looking them in the eye and saying hello as I walked by.

Splendid Magazine reviews John Alexander Ericson: Songs for Quiet Souls
Sweden's John Alexander Ericson looks like he could be in Savage Garden, but if his brand of moody pop has any Aussie lineage, it comes from arch gloom-poppers The Church.
For his solo debut, Ericson, erstwhile singer and songwriter for The Northern Territories, cuts enormous swathes of icy, string-leaden atmospherics and whittles them down into a dozen brooding pop numbers.
Ericson sings like a Scandinavian Thom Yorke -- his fragile, quavering voice is usually light and mellifluous, but capable of swelling mightily when a little extra drama and oomph are required, which is often.

Perhaps this character could be homosexual, or perhaps not – but one can only hope that, unlike the European discoverers who happened upon cultural differences in gender and sexuality perceptions amongst Native American tribes, socially we’ve begun to come to the place that such shallow assumptions are perceived as just that.
That's not to imply the film has no relevance for non-gay viewers - the quest for normalcy and safety has always been a part of human experience, let alone the quality of filmmaking and acting that is worth the rental or purchase.
I do not know enough about Native American culture to point to that as a source of inspiration for Jarmusch in including this brief element to the film - but if anything, it gives a glimpse at how mysterious this land is, and life is in itself.

John Alexander Ericson - Songs For Quiet Souls - Stylus Magazine
Other entries, such as “Subnation” see you stroll through moonlit alleyways: a distended cacophony of celestial bell tones seeping through mantelpieces, piano chords plodding like tiny grains of ice rattling shrubs, and hazy ambient textures wafting in a manner akin to late night steam rising off a bowery sidewalk.
Ericson, himself, has an appealing voice capable of shifting timbres, from gruff and whispery to rather shrill and strained.
His lyrics, sown together during nights spent in various local bars, opt for straightforward and honest declarations, confessions and ponderings, rather than poetic metaphor, as were occasionally found in his previous efforts under the guise of The Northern Territories.

John Alexander Ericson and Stefan Sääf took turns spilling their guts through equally powerfully fragile vocals, enchanting a world hungry for substance within the alternative genres.
However, Ericson, on his own, is even more held back in his musical approach, leaving plenty of room for thought and intricate song plotting.

There are some good rules-of-thumb that can help get someone in the ballpark (as Dr. Ericson has spelled out quite logically), yet there will always be minor tweaks and adjustments to compensate for a variety of factors unique to each person and instrument.

So - what I am saying here is that I support Dr. Ericson's approach - with the notion that I might need to compensate it a little for my own tastes.

slant // magazine.com: DVD Review - Bad Day at Black Rock
Similar to Robert Aldrich and John Huston, two filmmakers with similar interests in classic, male-centric genres, Sturges knew how to move a story from point A to point B with a modicum of fuss and a healthy measure of gritty grace.
"They're every one of them locked up," says weak-kneed Pete Wirth (John Ericson) about his hotel's rooms, though when coupled with Smith's description of the Japanese as "mad dogs" and confession about his anger over Pearl Harbor (and frustration at not successfully enlisting), the comment also subtly alludes to U.S. wartime incarceration policy.
Tracy embodies Macreedy with his trademark noble strength, using his calm, burly physicality and wry sense of humor (via needling retorts to threats) to get under the skin of his adversaries.

One of the first Hollywood films to deal openly with white racism toward Japanese Americans during World War II, this drama directed by 1950s action maestro John Sturges (The Great Escape) stars Spencer Tracy as a one-armed stranger named MacReedy, who arrives in the tiny town of Black Rock on a hot day in 1945.
Seeking a hotel room and the whereabouts of an ethnic Japanese farmer named Komoko, MacReedy runs smack into a wall of hostility that escalates into serious threats.
