Richard Evelyn, who was High Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex in 1633-4, was the son of a man who made an immense fortune through the introduction of the manufacture of gunpowder into England.
Evelyn laid out famous gardens at Sayes Court and worked all his life on a projected treatise on gardening, to be called Elysium britannicum, which he never completed and published, though various parts of it were.
Evelyn was able to travel abroad during virtually the whole of the Civil War--from 1643-7 and again 1649-52.

Evelyn first came to the attention of Samuel Hartlib in 1653, when he was engaged on collecting material for a history of trades, a project which he would pursue later in his life, particularly as a Fellow of the Royal Society in the 1660s.
Evelyn was confident that human ingenuity and labour could return the earth to its pristine fertility and beauty, and restore paradise in a garden designed according to ancient precepts (Evelyn Papers Ms.
However, Evelyn placed less stress on the mater ial benefits which might result from such a restoration, and more on the spiritual advantages of gardens, calling attention to the perfect knowledge of Adam in Eden, and arguing that the gardener might be ‘an absolute Philosopher’ (Evelyn Papers Ms.45, p.4).

 Who was John Evelyn?
Born in 1620 into a substantial Surrey landowning family whose fortunes were founded in gunpowder manufacture, John Evelyn came of age just as the Civil War began `in a conjunction of the greatest and most prodigious hazards that ever the youth of England saw'.
To escape the disturbances, he embarked on a prolonged and formative period of travel in Italy and France, finally coming to rest in Paris in 1647 where he married the daughter of the English Resident, Sir Richard Browne, whose house was a centre for the exiled royalist community.
It has been suggested that Evelyn tried to discourage her from the marriage in order to keep her under his influence.

Although Evelyn's diary covers over 50 years, and that of his friend Samuel Pepys covers only eight years, Pepys's diary is actually longer; and, unlike Pepys, Evelyn reveals very little about himself.
