  John Dryden
Erasmus Dryden was the son of Sir Erasmus Dryden, and was a justice of the peace under Cromwell.
Dryden was given the degree of M. by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1668; in 1670 he was made poet laureate and royal historiographer, which brought him an annual income of £200.
Dryden was accused of time-serving by his enemies, but this charge is easily disproved by his perseverance in his conversion during the next reign, when he refused even to dedicate his translation of Virgil to William III, lest he should be suspected of denying his religious or political principles.

John Dryden, an English poet and dramatist who would dominate literary efforts of The Restoration, was born on August 19, 1631, in Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, England.
Dryden's relationship with Killigrew's company continued until 1678 at which point he broke with the theatre (which was floundering in debt) and offered his latest play, Oedipus, a drama he had co-authored with Nathaniel Lee, to another company.
John Dryden died in London on May 12, 1700, and was buried in Westminster Abbey next to Chaucer.

Living in Dryden: John C. Lacy
In 1819 he erected the first clothing works in Dryden, almost on the present site of the Dryden Woolen Mill, and in the next year, which was the last of his life, he and two of his brothers developed the Dryden Mineral Springs, where the Sanitarium is now located.
John C. Lacy was born on his father's farm in Dryden near the location of the present stone grist mill, October 21, 1808, and was, consequently, only twelve years of age at the time of his father's death.
He belonged to the first temperance organization in Dryden and, in 1861, he joined the First M. church of this village, of which he was always, from that time, a stable and constant member, contributing largely of his time and means to its management and support.

Dryden also pioneered "industrial" life insurance by making small industrial policies available to factory workers for only pennies a week.

 Dryden Flight Research Center
Dryden engineers pioneered DFCS, and the 30th anniversary of the first flight of Dryden's F-8 Digital Fly-By-Wire aircraft was May 25, 2002.
While Dryden is known primarily for its flight test capabilities, closer inspection of these technologies led to the development of an office devoted to the full-time protection and dissemination of these valuable assets.
Dryden's work paved the way for the DFCS now used in the Space Shuttle and today's military and civilian aircraft, making them safer, more maneuverable, and more efficient.

Although he served as the project's catalyst, Dryden recruited the U.S. Air Force to be its sponsor.

When the 21-year old John Nash wrote his 27-page dissertation outlining his "Nash Equilibrium" for strategic non-cooperative games, the impact was enormous.
When the young Nash had applied to graduate school at Princeton in 1948, his old Carnegie Tech professor, R.J. Duffin, wrote only one line on his letter of recommendation: "This man is a genius".
It was at Princeton that Nash encountered the theory of games, then recently launched by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern.

Plato raised the question of the authenticity of poetic knowledge in the Ion, in which both poet and performer are forced to admit ignorance about the source of their inspiration or the function of their craft.
John Dryden, the master critic of Restoration England, upheld neoclassical standards, adding his own emphasis.
The radical shift in emphasis was further delineated by John Keats in his Letters and by ^Percy Bysshe Shelley in his Defense of Poetry [1821] - "poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world." Diverse trends marked the criticism of the mid-19th century.
