  John Fahey
Fahey announced himself with a style based on an original folk blues theme, encompassing blues, jazz, country and gospel music, and at times incorporating classical pieces, although retaining an almost traditional edge to his arrangements.
Fahey re-recorded the album in 1964 and 1967 (The Legend Of Blind Joe Death, released in 1996, is a mix of all three albums), and by the late 60s it had become a cult record, one with which to be seen, rather than actually play.
Fahey affiliated himself with the alternative rock community in the 90s, concentrating on the electric guitar and musique concrete instead of the acoustic blues/folk of his earlier albums.

John Fahey - Biography - AOL Music
Fahey was a colorful figure from the time he became an accomplished guitarist in his teens.
Fahey sold Takoma to Chrysalis in the mid-'70s, but continued to record regularly, and also tour (though his live performances were erratic).
The Fahey discography is dauntingly large and diverse; the neophyte is advised to start with the two-disc Return of the Repressed, but those who wish to dig deeper will be very pleased with Takoma's extensive reissues, which started to appear in the late nineties.

What ever happened to John Fahey?
When John Fahey's recordings of syncopated, finger-style guitar compositions, redolent of old blues, rags and hymns, began appearing in the early 1960's, he was taken to be an acoustic blues revivalist or a coffeehouse folkie.
Fahey's moment as he rides back into view as an avant-garde father figure, whom the guitarist Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth has acknowledged as a "secret influence." John Fahey's music is conceptually slippery, belonging to no genre.
Fahey found him, had lost interest in music but saw an opportunity to get off the Mississippi plantation where he was a tenant farmer.

The History of Rock Music. John Fahey: biography, discography, reviews, links
John Fahey is the man who introduced the stream of consciousness into folk music, and turned folk music into classical music, and then made it cross the boundaries of western and eastern music.

John Fahey's life on earth ended in 2001, but the iconic guitarist was always a man out of time.
Fahey the musician was an obstinate blues scholar who advanced a decidedly non-folkie version of instrumental Americana and who formed his own record company at the age of 20.
Fahey hated the decade in which he came to prominence and reserved a particular antipathy for the grandiose self-indulgence of hippies.

John Fahey (1939 - 2001) was an American guitarist and composer, and one of the first guitarists to perform solo works for the steel-string acoustic guitar.
In later years, Fahey was much admired and cited as an influence by a new generation of musicians, probably as much for the resoluteness with which he followed his individual path as for his interest in alternate tunings.
Fahey was also noted for his writing skills, having written voluminous liner notes which (among other things) satirized the folk music scholarship of his day.

 Byron Coley on John Fahey
John Fahey is one of the premier guitarists/composers of our era.
Fahey released one album in the '50's, ten in the '60's, eight in the '70's, nine in the '80's, and nine-or-so in the '90's.
These pairings, while obvious to Fahey (who has always considered his music as a part of the avant garde), upset some of his old fans, but that was an inevitable byproduct of his re-emergence.

John Fahey - The Yellow Princess (Album Review)
Fahey is undoubtedly one of the lesser-known fathers of modern progressive music, be it progressive folk, rock, or jazz.
All of these influences meld together to make Fahey one of the few, truly unique forces in American music history, and all of them are apparent on his classic from 1968: The Yellow Princess.
The Yellow Princess was a significant record for Fahey in that it marked a shift from the delta blues of his Blind Joe Death records to the realm of music inspired not just by America’s South but also by the world at large.

Washington City Paper: John Fahey, 1939—2001
Fahey effectively established his legacy on his own terms, not only as a performer but as a writer and a record-label owner; in whatever guise, he remained a staunch champion of the music that had changed his life back in the '50s.
What you also hear is Fahey's attraction to the mystery and drama of the blues, and his attempt to illuminate—or at least to confront—the suffering and sense of dread he heard on those Blind Willie Johnson and Patton 78s.
Fahey was creating new material right up until the end and had recently recorded four CDs' worth of demos, including originals and songs by George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.

In a manner perhaps typical of Fahey, this collection of self-produced pieces ends his career on a note both simple and probing.
For the first time in years, we hear Fahey, if not without, then at least de-emphasizing the experimental, and at times downright menacing leanings, displayed on recordings such as Womblife and City of Refuge; favoring, instead, a more personal and reflective approach.
On this piece we hear a refreshed and revitalized Fahey and little in the way of the clumsiness of which he has been accused in recent years.

 John Fahey review
Obviously City Of Refuge is a kind of catharsis for Fahey, a purge, a loud and defiant NO to all who/that would pigeonhole and otherwise constrain his creativity.
Which is not to say that "Let Go" bypasses Fahey's darker side entirely-- he hasn't made an album yet, secular or otherwise, that does-- but the darkness here is more passive than aggressive, taking the form of melancholy or mild dread rather than rage.
This is by far Fahey's prettiest album, but its prettiness is not in any way false or shallow; it's just, well, gorgeous, and genuinely moving, haunting, like a fond memory from the ever-more-distant past.

Fahey's been playing this stuff for so long that his explorations turn into abstractions; he'll stretch and twist a tune to it's breaking point just to see what will happen when it snaps.
Fahey also plays lap steel on "Song For Sara," melting the song's woozy neo-Hawaiian melody in a bath of spacy reverb.
