Fictionwise eBooks: Liquid Death and other Stories by John Russell Fearn   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
By 1939, Fearn was expressing to friends his liking for crime mysteries, in preference to sf writing, but commercial exigencies dictated that, as a full time writer, he had to continue to concentrate more on science fiction during the early years of the war.
Fearn was a great fan of Carr's work, and his own crime stories contain similar ingredients: a horrifying and baffling murder, locked rooms, and cerebral detection employing both scientific methods and psychological insights into the criminal mind, with a liberal sprinkling of dry humour.
Fearn of the considerable sums I would have paid her back in 1970 for all of the additional sf mss, whilst as her literary agent I could have also tried to place the additional western and detective material with other publishers.

Fictionwise eBooks: Voice of the Conqueror by John Russell Fearn   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
As Fearn's literary executor, I am delighted to have this opportunity of introducing to new readers what is essentially a "lost" novel.
Voice of the Conqueror was written in 1954, at a time when Fearn was under an exclusive contract (so far as science fiction was concerned) with the UK paperback publishers Scion Ltd. His one permitted "outside market" was the Canadian magazine, the Toronto Star Weekly.
Fearn had established himself as a leading contributor to this prestigious magazine in the 1940s, before becoming contracted to Scion Ltd. Naturally, he had taken took good care to retain, in an otherwise exclusive contract, this one lucrative outside market.

 John Russell Fearn
By the early 1940s, Fearn had appeared in all of the leading magazines under his own name and numerous pseudonyms, creating a variety of plot-forms under different styles that ranged from universe-destroying thought variants to the intensely human stories.
Fearn also became a very successful and prolific writer of Westerns, of which his “Merridrew” series is particularly noted.
In 1950, Fearn was commissioned to write a long series of science fiction paperbacks for the British publisher Scion Ltd, under the contractual pen name of “Vargo Statten.” The very first novel ANNIHILATION (1950) became a best-seller and launched a new craze for science fiction in Britain.

Fearn (1908-1960) began as a short-story writer, but his later abundance of paperback originals has occluded his origins, here revealed through 17 stories published between 1934 and 1960 and spanning over 300 pages across twin volumes.
Nor was Fearn actually a clumsy writer: his stories zip along at light speed, incorporating tons of action and ideas without wasted words or extraneous detours.
Fearn, for all his awkwardnesses, possessed a wild-eyed faith in SF's illimitable potential.
