Field conceived these works for his own performance, and the fact that several of them do not have a scored slow movement is evidence that he would often improvise a Nocturne at that place in concert performance, presumably with or without orchestral accompaniment, depending on how "pressed" he was for time.

John Field - the son of Robert Field, of Golden Lane, Dublin - was born on July 26, 1782, and was baptized at St. Werburgh's Church on September 30 of the same year.
Field's visit to London was saddened by the death of his old master, Clementi, who passed away on March 10, and who was accorded a public funeral at Westminster Abbey on March 29, Field being one of the chief mourners.
Field died on January 11, 1837, and was buried in the Wedensky Kirchhof, Moscow, on the 15th.

To the Irish pianist and composer John Field has been credited the invention of the Nocturne, a form later adopted and developed by Chopin.
Field was born in Dublin in 1782, the son of a violinist, but moved with his family to London in 1793, perhaps taking violin lessons from Haydn's friend Salomon.
Although Field wrote seven piano concertos and a series of chamber compositions for piano and strings, his chief claim on posterity lies in his eighteen Nocturnes.

The end of the golden age in English music coincided with the end of the reign of James I. Byrd and Weelkes died in 1623, Orlando Gibbons in 1625 and John Bull, living abroad, in 1628.
