John Fiske - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Fiske (1842 - 1901), born Edmund Fisk Green, was an American philosopher and historian.
On the second marriage of his mother (1855) he assumed the name of his maternal great-grandfather, John Fiske.
In books such as Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy (ISBN 0-384-15780-7), Fiske aimed to show that "in reality there has never been any conflict between religion and science, nor is any reconciliation called for where harmony has always existed." Fiske was a popular lecturer on these topics in his early career.

 Fiske: Media Matters
Fiske challenges the distinction between the 'real' and that which is constructed by the 'media' to argue that all events are, in fact, mediated, and are made real only through discourse.
John Fiske's lively analysis of the discourse surrounding various media events is interesting and engaging, and would serve as an excellent introduction for undergraduates or first-year graduate students to Fiske's critical perspective.

Fiske's extant verse, written from 1652 to 1655, was discovered in a neglected commonplace book at Brown University and published by Harold Jantz in 1943.
No mere acrostics, Fiske's anagrams rearrange the letters of his subject's name into phrases or paired nouns that, through rich metaphorical associations, reveal the person's godly qualities, which in turn reinforce the values of the Puritan community.

While his birthdate in England remains uncertain, the records on Fiske as a minister, physician, and, to the extent that his commonplace book accords, as a poet in New England are fairly complete.
There is no possible influence that Fiske could have exercised on any contemporary poet, because he apparently kept his literary activities as private as did Edward Taylor after him.
As the poems of these elegists show, their intent was indeed to lament and to exhort in a public way; they move in form and content according to the existing guidelines for the writing of a funeral elegy that were to constitute the general pattern for the devel-

The Unseen World, and other essays, by John Fiske (chapter4)
As we pointed out in the foregoing essay, while all this voluminous literature throws but an uncertain light upon the life and teachings of the founder of Christianity, it nevertheless furnishes nearly all the data which we could desire for knowing what the early Christians thought of the master of their faith.
The mere desire for a monotheistic creed had led many pagans, in Paul’s time, to embrace Judaism, in spite of its requirements, which to Romans and Greeks were meaningless, and often disgusting; but such conversions could never have been numerous.
The doctrine of the resurrection, in particular, was not likely to prove attractive when accompanied by the picture of the Messiah treading the Gentiles in the wine-press of his righteous indignation.

Fiske is one of the few intellectuals considering the media in an easily accessible way whose work doesn't fall into the boring, and woefully inadequate school of 'the media is making every child a killer' stupidity.
He carefully and with relevance examines just how media audiences use media texts to produce what we want from them: we are not as controlled by the evil corporate powers as much as either they or knee-jerk reactionary critics would like us to believe.
