The second son of Richard the 9th Earl, was John Fitzalan, who married Eleanor Baroness Maltravers in her own right - and John Fitzalan, his son, was Baron Maltravers in right of his mother, and succeeded his cousin Thomas, before mentioned as 12th Earl of Arundel.
His son, John Fitzalan, the 13th Earl of Arundel, was not only entitled to bear these arms, but was also a Knight of the Garter.
The burden of probability is that John Fitzalan was both the builder and original owner of this house, for it was undoubtedly built about the time he lived, namely from 1415 to 1434, when he died.
