De Francisci created the Congressional medal awarded to Gen. John J. Pershing, commander of the American forces in World War I. The American Institute of Mining Engineers commissioned the sculptor for the medal they awarded to Herbert Hoover, who began his professional life as an engineer.
Among them were Chester Beach, Anthony De Francisci, John Flanagan, Hermon A. MacNeil, and Adolph A.
The Secretary of the Treasury, Henry B. Fowler concurred.

JOSEPH HIRSHHORN: John Flanagan was the first sculptor I bought.
Israels is a painter who is very “schmaltzy”-I want to use the proper word-well, for example, a picture of a little crib with a doctor examining a baby and so on; it’s very sympathetic, very sweet.
JOSEPH HIRSHHORN: Well, no, I said I didn’t really have any knowledge until I was thirty-one years old, that was 1930 and that I learned a great deal more and I bought art with some knowledge.

 Series Spotlight - Washington Quarters 1932-1998*
      Designed by John Flanagan, a New York sculptor, the Washington Quarter was minted as a commemorative distinguishing the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth.
In 1965, the transition to clad coinage began and the mintmark was moved to the obverse in 1968; some special issues were struck in silver-clad.
The Washington Quarter is the second longest running series in modern coinage behind only the Lincoln Cent.
