John Forester Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Forester's work on the committees that make traffic law stopped government from restricting cyclists further, restored the jeopardized principle that cyclists have the rights and duties of drivers of vehicles, and introduced some reduction in the inequitable restrictions that had been placed on cyclists.
Forester's scientific criticism of the first two sets of governmental standards for bicycle facilities (California's and the Federal Highway Administration's) demonstrated that their facilities would be extremely dangerous for cyclists.
Forester's work on teaching cyclists demonstrated that cycling with the rights and duties of drivers of vehicles is not nearly as complex a task as had previously been thought.

John Forester on Bike Lanes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
My study comparing the behavior of cyclists and motorists on streets in cities with bike-lane systems against the behavior on streets in cities without bike-lane systems shows that the types of cyclist and motorist errors that, in cities without bike-lane systems, cause 30% of car-bike collisions, are greatly increased in cities with bike-lane systems.
John mistakenly states that I say a bike can make a right turn on the right side of a car making a right turn.

TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES: Other Materials: Cycling Safety on Bikeways vs. Roads
It is Pucher's reply to John Forester's spring 2001 TQ article "The Bikeway Controversy," where he opposes separate rights of way as well as any special provisions of any kind for cyclists.
Although Forester makes a number of theoretical arguments why bikeways are unsafe, his empirical test of the superiority of vehicular cycling is based on a sample of one-a single bike ride he took on a new bike path in Palo Alto, California.
Forester admits in his article that virtually all surveys of the American public indicate that most people believe bikeways would be safer than cycling on roadways.

John Forester not only defined and developed the system of scientifically-based instruction in traffic cycling; he compiled and analyzed the data to back up his recommendations.
On a few questions about cycling equipment, Forester's positions appear to be intended more to prevent legal trouble for cyclists than to recommend the most prudent course of action: for example, he does not recommend rear-view mirrors, and he considers a large rear reflector sufficient for night riding without an additional taillight.
Forester does tend to ramble, and some of the advice I don't agree with (like you don't really need a rear light at night, just a rear red reflector and a good front light).

 Distefano v. John Glenn Forester(2001) * California
Knight primary assumption of the risk doctrine was inapplicable because Forester owed and breached a statutory duty of care under the basic speed law provisions set forth in section 38305 and the provisions of section 38316 proscribing reckless driving.
Knight rule, Forester's conduct in driving fast in the middle of the dirt trail while ascending the blind hill was not so reckless as to be totally outside the range of the ordinary activities involved in the sport of off-roading.
We thus hold as a matter of law that Forester owed no duty in tort to Distefano to use a spotter or equip his dune buggy with a whipper to reduce the risk of collision that was inherent in the off-roading activities in which the parties were participating at the time the accident occurred.
