John Forrest also surveyed in 1878 the north-western district between the rivers Ashburton and Lady Grey, and in 1882 the Fitzroy district.
In 1876 he was made deputy surveyor-general, receiving the thanks of the colony for his services and a grant of s000 acres of land; for a few months at the end of 1878 he acted as commissioner of crown lands and surveyor-general, being given the full appointment in 1883 and retaining it till 1890.

John Forrest attended the government school in Bunbury under John Hislop until the age of thirteen, when he was sent north to Perth to attend the Bishop's Collegiate School, now Hale School.
Forrest's team accompanied this group in a more northerly direction, but after a week of travelling it became clear that their destination was Poison Rock, where the explorer Robert Austin was known to have left eleven of his horses for dead in 1854.
Forrest had been suffering from a cancer on his temple since early in 1917 and by 1918 he was very ill. He resigned as treasurer but not from parliament on 21 March 1918, and shortly afterwards boarded ship for London, where he hoped to obtain specialist medical attention.

John Forrest Chapman was an Iowa native and graduated from Grinnell College in 1924.
Chapman received honorary degrees from Grinnell and Emerson Colleges and died in 1991 of a heart failure at the age of 88.
