Miller stated he was killed while in the line of duty in late April 1944 and was buried with full military honors in a military cemetery somewhere overseas.
Miller entered the army at Fort Oglethorpe in November of 1941 and was stationed for sometime in England before being transferred to North Africa.
Miller was missing in action, and this message was followed by the one received on Saturday morning, stating that he had been killed.

In 1872 and 1876 Miller was the Republican candidate for Presidential elector, and a delegate to the second State Constitutional Convention of 1878-79.
Miller wrote almost daily to his wife between 1862 and 1865, except when she was with him in Nashville and Murfreesboro.

MILLER, John Franklin, senator, born in South Bend, Indiana, 21 November, 1831" died in Washington, D. C., 8 March, 1886.
He was a member of the state senate in 1860, but resigned to enter the army, and, after serving on the governor's staff as colonel, was in command of the 29th regiment of Indiana volunteers.
He was a Republican presidential elector in 1872, 1876, and 1880, a member of the California constitutional convention in 1879, and was elected to the United States senate as a Republican in January, 188l, serving from the following March until his death.

During the forty-seventh session of Congress, in 1882, Senator Miller introduced a bill to suspend the immigration of Chinese laborers to the United States for a period of twenty years.
President Arthur vetoed this bill, but passed the second bill Miller proposed including an exclusionary period of only ten years.
