 John Cage: Freeman Etudes
John Cage's Freeman Etudes for violin are extremely difficult pieces of music -- one might go so far as to declare them "impossible." Even a brief and casual listening to Irvine Arditti's performance of the etudes on this recording is enough to convey to the listener a sense of their formidable complexity.
In the Freeman Etudes, the violinist is a model for society by showing that no project is too difficult to pursue, provided that one is committed to the hard work necessary for its completion.
Cage was commissioned in 1977 by Betty Freeman to compose the etudes for the violinist Paul Zukofsky.

 Thomas Jefferson and John Freeman
While Freeman might have been an uncommon and ironic name for a slave, the rental arrangement was not unusual, either for Jefferson or for thousands of other slaves and their masters in the early republic.
Apparently literate, Freeman in 1804 signed his name to a document stating that he had received eight dollars for his wages for the month of June.
Further, we know from the language of the document that John was a slave and not a servant, because Baker sold Jefferson “the Negro John” rather than John’s labor, and then noted that John would “belong to, and be the property of” Jefferson.

Our Freeman Origins by Alan Cole Freeman
The date is from a handwritten permission slip from a John Freeman, giving permission to his daughter Lucy to marry Gabriel, and a marriage license, both from the Wilkes County courthouse records.
We have never been able to find a John Freeman who had a Lucy Freeman who was born in 1774, the year of her birth as indicated by a family bible in later years.
My assumption that Gabriel is related to other Georgia Freemans of that time is based loosely on the names of his descendents also, William, Gabriel, John, Josiah, Jasper, Newton, Nancy, etc., since children back then almost always carried on the names of their parents, grandparents, and/or other respected relatives.

Freeman's route with the ketogenic diet calls to mind Gandhi's comment: First they ignore you; then they laugh at you; then they fight you; then you win.
In the 1920s, when bromides and phenobarbital led approaches to epilepsy, the alternative-a high-fat, very low-carbohydrate and protein regimen-gave about a third of child patients excellent to complete control of their seizures.
In part because the diet was so unusual-it mimics seizure-quelling metabolic changes that come, oddly enough, after days of fasting-and in part because nobody had a clue to how it worked, the ketogenic route seemed magical.
