John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres, KP, GCB, OM, GCVO, KCMG, PC (28 September 1852–22 May 1925) was a British Field Marshal, the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in World War I.
French was particularly upset by the fact that Kitchener arrived wearing his Field Marshal's uniform, he felt Kitchener was implying that he was French's superior and not simply a cabinet member, a fact he mentioned in a letter to Winston Churchill.

John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres (September 28, 1852–May 22, 1925) was a British soldier and Field Marshal, the first commander of the BEF in World War I.
He argued with the Cabinet against Lord Kitchener and Douglas Haig that the BEF should be deployed in Belgium, rather than Amiens, where both Haig and Kitchener believed it would be well placed to deliver a vigorous counter attack once the route of German advance was known.
In 1915 his indecision returned, he declined to cooperate with the French and after the failures at Aubers Ridge and at Loos the British offensive operations were almost halted.

Field Marshal Herbert Onslow Plumer, 1st Viscount Plumer of Messines, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, GBE (13 March 1857–16 July 1932) was a British colonial official and soldier born in Torquay.
Plumer, a meticulous planner, would often express the plans of the his superiors as being too ambitous and more often than not, as seen at the third battle of Ypres, Passchendaele he would be proved to be right.
Few of the serving troops would have seen any of the five army commanders (Henry Horne, 1st Baron Horne, Plumer, Julian Byng, Hubert Gough, Henry Rawlinson, 1st Baron Rawlinson) in person, let alone the commander in Chief (John French, 1st Earl of Ypres then Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig).

John Singer Sargent's General Officers of the Great War
By the close of 1915 it was clear that French (his superior) was ill-suited to the nature of the campaign, and Haig was appointed the new Commander in Chief of the BEF on 10 December 1915.
French was temperamentally unsuited to command of the BEF, becoming so depressed at the prospects of success following the Mons campaign that his chief concern came to be the safe welfare of his troops, to the cost of his French allies.
Once the war of manoeuvre ended French's mood switched to one of over-optimism, until by Autumn 1915 he was once again reluctant to co-operate with the French and had to be urged into action.

The French commander, Joseph Joffre had ordered his forces to retreat to the Marne on 25 August, compelling the BEF to undertake a lengthy and arduous withdrawal to conform to the French movements.
John French's faltering belief in the competence of his Allies caused further indecision, and led to him effectively deciding to pull the BEF out of the war by withdrawing south of the Seine.
Haig had been campaigning for the removal of French as commander of the BEF and had told King George V that French was "a source of great weakness to the army, and no one had confidence in him any more".

On the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, Haig led the 1st Corps to northern France, and, early in 1915, he became commander of the 1st Army.
On December 17 of that year, he succeeded Sir John French (afterward 1st Earl of Ypres) as commander in chief of the British Expeditionary Force.
The next year, when the French decided to stand on the defensive until forces from the United States (which had entered the war April 6) could arrive in quantity, Haig resolved to try to defeat the Germans by a purely British offensive in French and Belgian Flanders.
