It was a unanimous decision: Frusciante was in.
Frusciante was described as "a skeleton covered in thin skin." At the height of his addictions, Frusciante was literally on the verge of death, having almost died earlier in the year due to a blood infection.
John has reported in an interview that he heard about the Red Hot Chili Peppers when his teacher, whom was a guitarist, informed him that he was going to try-out for a band named the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

John Frusciante - Biography - AOL Music
Frusciante's first recording with the Peppers, 1989's Mother's Milk, helped break the popular college rock band through to the mainstream -- resulting in their first gold record, with John's amazing guitar playing serving as a catalyst for many of the songs.
Frusciante found it increasingly difficult to handle his newly found fame, and retreated into a haze of hard drugs and unpredictable behavior.
Then, a disturbing article about John appeared in the L.A. Weekly, which painted Frusciante as a heroin abuser with a death wish (the interviewer was also shocked at his ghastly appearance).

John Frusciante: The Will to Death - PopMatters Music Review
A solo release from John Frusciante used to mean impenetrable semi-indulgence a la Syd Barrett or Skip Spence.
Frusciante's lyrics seem to mimic his ungovernable, fated approach to recording: "Learning that there's nothing to gain from advice / Hey doubt, come on around any time / Anyhow mistakes are what lead you through life / Down and out's only if you think up and in's right".
Amped by Frusciante's gruff vocal attack, smothered in echo, "Loss" breaches the accumulation of knowledge through the experience of tragedy: "There was a time when all was empty / Unorganized, a clog, a death scene / Things opened up and there's so many / Paths to walk, ports of entry".

John has a fantastic ability to be able to create colours, shapes and textures with his guitar and this has never been more evident than on this EP.
The D.C. Ep was recorded without any of John's own gear (guitars/amps) and is his first release to not dabble in synth and yet this EP bears the usual unmistakeable mark of ANOTHER perfect John Frusciante record.

Upon receiving John Frusciante’s record, my first thought was: “Now what the hell does that title mean?” And to be honest, I still haven’t figured it out, but at this point, it doesn’t even matter because the album is solid and doesn’t need a clever or catchy title to add appeal.
Frusciante demonstrates his memorable and impressive voice on songs like “Moments Have You!” in which he manages to hit some very high notes.

John Frusciante: To Record Only Water For Ten Days (2001): Reviews
Frusciante channels his creative spirits through a homegrown hybrid of early '80s new wave and late '60s acid rock that sounds a lot better than it reads on paper.
The formula here is for Frusciante to carve tunes out of loose, cyclical riffs, a few basic samples and drum programmes and his own parched voice.
Frusciante cleverly ties together drum beats with acoustic and electric guitars to a dazzling effect (esp. Ramparts) His singing which is not for everyone, has a wholesome quality and make the tracks sound very sincere.

It takes a lot to be known as the weird one out of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but for guitarist John Frusciante the title comes easy.
He abruptly quit the band at the height of its popularity in 1992 to become a full-time drug addict, claimed to communicate with the fourth dimension, and released a couple of predictably loopy solo albums before returning in time to record the group's brilliant comeback discs, 1999's Californication and 2001's By The Way.
Only now, Frusciante is better able to draw life out of his lo-fi experiments, twisting the shiftless strums and electronic fizzes of songs like "Regret" and "Song to Sing When I'm Lonely" into beautiful explorations reminiscent of Radiohead and the Mars Volta.

On a hazy, Southern California summer morning on the Sunset Strip, in a hotel conference room, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist vibrates at unknown frequencies, his wiry frame fidgeting to the verge of short circuit at this non-music-making meet.
It does, however, encompass a frank, often-metaphysical discussion on life and music, which to Frusciante are, of course, synonymous.
John Frusciante: I was going around doing interviews and people would ask me, "Who's your favorite guitarist?" and I'd say, "Michael Rother." This is around the time we were touring for Californication or when we were writing By the Way.
