John Gardner Wilkinson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (October 5, 1797–October 29, 1875) was a well-known English traveller, writer and pioneer Egyptologist of the 19th century.
Wilkinson died at Llandovery in 1875, having already bequeathed to his old school, Harrow, his collections with an elaborate catalogue in 1864.
Wilkinson's papers are now held in the Griffith Institute, Oxford, and form an invaluable resource to some of the earliest recorded states (dating to 1821-1856, before the advent of widespread tourism and collection) of many Egyptian monuments.

Matthaus-Passion BWV 244 - conducted by John Eliot Gardiner
Gardiner tends to be a theatrical conductor in Bach, and I love that approach in the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), but not in the St. Matthew Passion.
Of Gardiner 'drawing' his soloists from the Choir, I think that is the case in his SJP, except for the Bass (C. Hauptmann) and of course Jesus (S. Varcoe) the Evangelist (A. Rolfe Johnson).
Gardiner himself conducted from the floor of the stage [not from a podium], and he wondered freely around, approaching each choir on its turn.

St. John Passion (1725 version) by Craig Smith at jsbach.org
The first thing that should be said about the 1725 version of the "St. John Passion" is that the changes Bach made to the score later on were almost without exception clear improvements.
There is not a weak link among the soloists, although I must admit that the arias which are not in the standard score (such as "Zerschmettert mich") caught my attention more than the more familiar numbers.
In short, I would suggest that anyone unfamiliar with the "St. John" investigate one of the better recordings of the final version (such as Gardiner's) and then come to this.

The daughter of a choral conductor and a singer, the English mezzo-soprano, Clare Wilkinson, started her musical activities early, joining her father’s choir, The William Byrd Singers of Manchester, at 14 and giving her first professional solo concert with Musica Antiqua of London at 16.
After several years singing with many London groups (including The Cardinall’s Musick, Tenebrae, Trinity Baroque, The English Concert, The Tallis Scholars and The Sixteen) Clare Wilkinson took up a scholarship to study with Hazel Wood at Trinity College of Music, London, where she won the Early Music, Lieder, English Song and Oratorio/Cantata Prizes.

Then John and Peter Ellis, on their return from active service, rented it to bring on early potatoes for their market-gardening venture on all the Glebe fields.
