A project undertaken by Bolton that should find a place in any account of his career is the 72-foot hole-in-the-ground antenna built in 1951 for a survey of the region near the galactic centre, which at the latitude of Sydney passes directly overhead.
One of John's last public appearances was at the unveiling of a memorial tablet there in November 1989 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the publication of the first paper on identifications.
If Bolton would join the cloud physics group for two years or so, Bowen would use all his influence (see below) to obtain for Bolton the plum directorship of radio astronomy at the California Institute of Technology which was about to enter the field [4].

John Bolton left Cambridge University in his native England to serve in the Royal Navy during World War II.
Bolton built Caltech 's Owens Valley Radio Observatory and directed it from 1955 - 60, then returned to Australia to supervise the completion of and become the first direct of the Parkes Radio Observatory.
