John George Hohman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John George Hohman (also spelled Johann Georg Hohman), who was active between 1802 and 1846, was a German-American magician, herbalist, and occult author.
He immigrated to the USA from Germany in 1802, settled in the area around Reading, Pennsylvania in the Pennsylvania Dutch community, where he practised and instructed in the arts of folk magic and folk religion which became known as pow-wow.
The name "Pow-Wows" was only added to the book in late 19th century reprints in the wake of the sudden popularity of Spiritualism in the United States, in which "Indian Spirit Guides" were frequently seen during seances.

 Northvegr - John George Hohman's Pow-Wows
It was about the same time that my wife cured John Bingemann's wife of the wild-fire, which she had on a sore leg.
JOHN JUNKINS' daughter and daughter-in-law both suffered very much from pain in the head; and his wife too had a sore check, on which the wild-fire had broken out severely.
The daughter of John Arnold scalded herself with boiling coffee; the handle of the pot broke off while she was pouring out coffee, and the coffee ran over the arm and burnt it severely.

Okay, from page 12: 1846 edition by Hohman A Remedy to Catch Fish Take some kernels of roses, mustard seed, and the leg of a minx, then tie to a line, and be sure all the fish will gather.
Hohman's translation is painfully literal, but he specifies the leg of a mink (minx), not the foot of a weasel (they are related to be sure, but different species), and he says to tie the charm to a line, not to place it in a net.
Since Hohman says that the root in question will "clear the lungs of all bad stuff," it seems that his original translation of his own writing, crude as it was, was more accurate.

Hohman was a Catholic from PA wherein we have a great and complex history of magical/mystical Christian groups.
Hohman drew from "Egyptian Secrets," folk magic, and I suspect some of the writings/beliefs of the Wissahickon hermits, but it was "The Long Lost Friend" that became the major book in every powwow "doctor's" library.
Hohman was, in reality, a compiler of information adding local German, Scots-Irish and American Indian remedies to his work.

Some of the early German-language editions of "The Long Lost Friend" ascribe Hohman's receipts to Saint Albertus Magnus (1193-1280) and other editions claim that the remedies were collected from "the Arabic writings of the wise alchemist Omar Arey, Emir Chemir Tschasmir." Both of these attributions are missing from the English-language editions of the book.
Hohman's "Long Lost Friend" was what in music would be called a "cross-over hit." First published in German for Pennsylvania Dutch hex-meisters, after the translation of 1846 it had a tremendous influence on the Anglo-Saxon folk magicians of the Appalachians.
