John Gilpin, at the age of about forty, either enlisted or was conscripted into the 22nd Virginia Cavalry on August 8, 1863 for a term of three years.
John Gilpin was possibly 41 years old, and after all he had been through over the previous several months, may have been weaker and less healthy than a younger soldier.
John Gilpin, William Stilwell and William L. Smith were then sent to Elmira, NY, a harsh prison camp of 40 acres near the Chemug River, which was to have a death rate of twice that of other northern prison camps.

John Gilpin (18th century) was a real-life character whose exploits became legendary and featured in a well-known comic ballad by William Cowper of 1782, entitled, The Diverting History of John Gilpin.
John Gilpin was a wealthy draper from Cheapside in London, who owned land at Olney in Buckinghamshire, near where Cowper lived.
The poem tells how Gilpin and his wife and children became separated during a journey to the Bell Inn, Edmonton after Gilpin loses control of his horse, and is carried ten miles further to the town of Ware.

Back at New York some of the crew brought charges against their captain whom they felt could have reached the Falkland Islands that were 150-miles away if her captain had called for such an action as well as sounded the pumps earlier in the day.
The entire 22 member crew, three mates and captain aboard the John Milton, a medium clipper, were not so lucky when on the morning of February 20, 1858, after enduring a night of terrible winter storms, the John Milton struck a rock off Montauk, Long Island, and came apart.
She was laden with a supply of fruit, chickens and goat meat; and soon after noon, June 4th, she set sail for Tahiti under jib, foresail and mainsail, with the treasure also on board.

John Gilpin, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Read) Gilpin, was born September 17, 1765, and died April 19, 1808.
He inherited Gilpin Manor and spent his whole life there, taking an active interest in public affairs, and filling a number of public offices in his native county.
He succeeded his father as presiding judge of the Cecil county courts, February 14, 1788, was a presidential elector for John Adams in 1797, and for Thomas Jefferson in 1801 and 1805.

The comic poem The Diverting History of John Gilpin relates the tale of a linen draper named John Gilpin and his anniversary holiday, beset with misfortune from start to finish.
Cowper, who also wrote a translation of the works of Homer and whose poems influenced later Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, hoped that the poem would draw attention to his more serious works and also answer critics who accused him of lacking a sense of humor.
However, he came to resent being best known for John Gilpin, and later in his life refused to have the poem read in his presence.

Mary Unwin, whose life-long devotion to him he celebrates in "To Mary." Most of his country life was spent at Olney, where he met John Newton, the ardent evangelical preacher.
Cowper's sweet-tempered, playful moods found a way into many of his poems, the most notable being "The Diverting History of John Gilpin." He also made a relatively unsuccessful translation of Homer (1791).
Unwin in 1796, his old malady returned, and he wrote little except the anguished poem, "The Castaway." His letters are considered among the most brilliant in English literature.
