John Glover’s inclusion of the Palawa (the Tasmanian Aboriginal people) in his landscapes, startled, intrigued and fascinated his audience of the time.
Glover arrived in Van Diemen’s Land towards the end of the Black War of the late 1820s, when many colonists were advocating the complete "extirpation" of the Aborigines.
Glover used a synthesis of several of his ‘on the spot’ sketches of Aborigines for this composition.

Although financially successful in England and considering his age (Glover arrived in Tasmania on his 64th birthday), it seems unusual that John Glover should chose to travel to Van Dieman's Land in 1830.
He had great success in England and then came out to Australia where he, as critic John McDonald notes, "...totally reinvented himself, almost by accident as the first great Australian landscape painter." Now, for the first time, we are able to see these two separate stages of Glover's career in the same exhibition.

By the time Glover arrived in Tasmania the reality for the indigenous Palawa people could not have been more different as their population had been decimated and most had been removed from their land.
Soon after his arrival, Glover sketched the people of the Ouse River and Oyster Bay regions, who had responded ferociously to European intrusion and were the last significant group removed from the settled districts of Tasmania.
The exhibition and publication will feature John Glover’s preparatory sketches for Natives on the Ouse River, Van Diemen’s Land and a contemporaneous map showing the areas of white settlement, and the property of ‘Cawood’ where Glover completed a preparatory sketch for the landscape.
