"J. Gresham Machen, Inerrancy, and Creedless Christianity" by D.G. Hart
For this reason it was altogether fitting for Machen, given his associations with the Princeton Theology and the fundamentalist controversy, to be invited in 1927 under the auspices of the Bible League to give a series of lectures on biblical scholarship and the defence of the faith.
Machen acknowledged that he was no match for the philosophical origins of liberal Protestantism that extended back to Kant and Schleiermacher, though he did relish the irony of systematic thinkers whose critique of theology ended up destroying philosophy as well.
Machen answered first by pointing out that this way of thinking was at odds with the New Testament where, for instance, Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 established the basis of the Christian church, namely, that Christ died for sins, was buried, and raised again from the dead.

A Short History of the Life of J. G. Machen
Machen was one of the chief founder of the new denomination.
However, Machen responded that since the church was a voluntary organization, and one was not forced to join it, the church had the right to insist on its own beliefs, that is, the beliefs that one was required to hold in order to be a member of it.
Machen was not trying to deny others their rights to believe and practice what they want, but simply asked them to not be hypocrites in the church and hence violate the rights of those in the church to have it as they believe it should be.

DEFENDER OF THE FAITH: The Life of John Gresham Machen Part 1: Birth to Princeton
John Gresham Machen, the second of three sons, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 28, 1881.
Machen found it necessary, for the sake of intellectual and spiritual honesty, to explore the claims of theological liberalism and, while he never abandoned his own orthodox position, was nonetheless “profoundly shaken, even overwhelmed, by his encounter with this man [Herrmann] whose fervor and moral earnestness was so impressive.”
This time, Machen was persuaded to accept the position, after being assured that he would not have to pursue ordination to qualify for the position.” Nonetheless, Machen felt ill-prepared to undertake the position, and decided that he would, out of respect for Armstrong, accept the appointment for only one year.

John had come not to perform a work of his own, but to be a witness to the greater One who was to follow.
John had had revealed to him, moreover, not merely the fact that Jesus was the Saviour, but also something of the way in which the salvation was to be wrought.
Quite like John, Jesus came forward with the summons, "Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." But the new teacher differed from John in the more complete account which he gave of the nature of the Kingdom, and especially in the central place in the Kingdom which he assigned to himself.

 J. Gresham Machen's Response to Modernism :: Desiring God Christian Resource Library
Machen alerts us to the utter doctrinelessness of our day and the fact that we almost take it for granted that utilitarian thinking is the only hope for success, and that preaching or teaching doctrine is a prescription for failure.
Machen's interaction with Modernism shows the value of a God-centered vision of all reality – a worldview, a theology that is driven by the supremacy of God in all of life.
Machen did give significant thought to the whole issue of education for children, whether or not he faced the complexities of how to tackle the problems of the cities.

 J.G. Machen
Machen from about 1925 on, appears to believe that the liberals will or ought to leave the Presbyterian Church as they realize they are not traditional orthodox Christians but a new religion.
This is a strategic not a philosophic problem, it was not that Machen was unwilling or unable to compromise but that the moderates heard him as disturbing the peace and unity of the Church, not a call to truthfulness and doctrinal correctness.
Thus Machen was forced by his own conscience into what the church viewed as the gravest insubordination and disobedience to his ordination vows, and removed him from the ministry.

In this insightful volume, which is part of the "Swans are Not Silent", Piper looks at the life of Athanasius, the beloved bishop, John Owen, the greatest mind of the puritans, and J. Gresham Machen, one the last great theologians of the old Princeton Theological Seminary.
As a professor at Princeton Seminary, Machen was in a key position to witness this cultural shift that he called "modernity" and that he defined not as a subset of Christianity but rather as a hostile competitor to the traditional and historical faith grounded in Scripture.
Machen was not only a New Testament scholar, but also one of the first cultural apologists whose influence shaped the life of the great Francis Schaeffer among others.

One of Dr. Machen's famous aphorisms was, "Boys, there are two things wrong with this institution: you're not working hard enough and you're not having enough fun." He would then set about to correct the second of the two defects.
Machen, his critics charged, was unfit for the post because of "temperamental idiosyncrasies." Exactly what the idiosyncrasies were remained vague, but the stratagem worked.
It is an established fact that Machen never received, to his knowledge, nor did his father, one penny revenue from the alcoholic liquor industry.
