Oneida Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Oneida Society (Oneida Community) was a utopian commune founded by John H. Noyes in 1848 near Oneida, New York.
Noyes often used his own judgment in determining the partnerships which would form and would often encourage relationships between the weak and the devout in the community, in the hopes that the attitudes and behaviors of the devout would influence the weak.
Noyes (who was very old at the time) thought he should be the person to initiate sexual intercourse with girls as young as fourteen.

Noyes left no room for dissent in his community; he believed that "independence and liberty had to be separated from each other [and that] true freedom.
Noyes; her own sacrifice, rather than causing her to resent Noyes' demands, seems to have strengthened her feeling of obligation toward the Community and toward Noyes himself.
In fact, Noyes seems to have desired complete control of Tirzah's affection; he told her repeatedly that she was one of his favorite lovers, insisting, "I always expect something sublime when I sleep with you" (Miller 59).

Sir John Norris was accordingly ordered to Ireland with a considerable force to subdue him in 1595, but Tyrone succeeded in taking the Blackwater Fort and Sligo Castle before Norris was prepared; and he was thereupon proclaimed a traitor of Dundalk.
In 1598 a cessation of hostilities was arranged, and a formal pardon granted to Tyrone by Elizabeth.

John Humphrey Noyes and Hyper-Preterism - Keith Mathison  |  Critical Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
John saw, when Satan was first bound and cast into the pit, thrones and judgment given to the martyrs of Christ, and they lived and reigned with him a thousand years, but the rest of the dead lived not.
Noyes, in other words, believed that a future aspect to the judgment and resurrection remains to be fulfilled even though the Second Coming, and the primary resurrection and judgment had already occurred in A.D. Mr.
Noyes believed the Second Coming of Christ occurred in A.D. He also believed that the millennium was inaugurated in A.D. 70 and that there was a secondary element of the resurrection and judgment yet to be fulfilled, but these same doctrines were held by other acknowledged nineteenth century hyper-preterist authors such as Russell and Hampden-Cook.

One of the reasons for Noyes's success in staying in control of the Oneida Community throughout virtually its entire existence was his willingness to step aside during periods of crisis until his loyal associates were able to resolve major problems by appealing to his authority and principles in his absence.

Pierrepont B. Noyes devoted his life to peace, but as the author of the first apocalyptic vision of nuclear holocaust to be published in the United States after atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki he inaugurated a theme that haunts our collective imagination to the present day.
In the manner of H. Wells, he recounts the annihilation of a pre-prehistoric human civilization whose records the story's heros discover while exploring a cavern in southern France.
To make his parable clear, Noyes sets his tale in the context of the Peace Conference deliberations, and puts into the mouth of one character the words: "And the thing Markham is working on might be the most awful thing that's ever been invented.

Luther was an ardent follower of John H. Noyes and Noyes's teachings that promoted communal living, multiple sex partners, and other beliefs that were seen as questionable (if not downright evil) by Victorian society.
He wrote Noyes a long communication, in which he was very insolent, charging him with tyranny and oppression.
Out on his own, Guiteau began a long history of shady business practices, sneaking out of his lodgings in the dead of night without paying his bills, short stays in jail, and moving around to keep a step ahead of his growing number of creditors.
