John Brown Hamilton was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
His Victoria Cross is displayed at the National War Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland).
On 25/26 September 1917 north of the Ypres-Menin Road, Belgium, great difficulty was experienced in keeping the front and support line supplied with small arm ammunition, owing to the intense artillery fire.

In 1543 his half-brother, the 2nd Earl of Arran, became Governor and Hamilton returned to Scotland, he influenced the Earl to come to terms with Cardinal Beaton and his French supporters.
Hamilton was suspected of being privy to the murders of Darnley and Moray and after Mary was deposed in 1567 he was a leading figure amongst her supporters.
At the age of thirteen John becam the Commendator of Paisley abbey, he also travelled in Europe and is reported to have become interested in Lutheranism at this time.
