The reasons assigned for this change were that the greater number of companies were organized east of the Blue Ridge; and that because of the bad roads and deep snows in the Alleghenies at that season of the year rendered the march to Guyandotte almost impossible.
On the 22d of December the Governor and Council of State appointed John F. Hamtramck of Shepherdstown, Jefferson county, now in West Virginia, Colonel of the Regiment, and he, arrived at Richmond on the 30th ensuing, at which time there was a great military and civic demonstration.
February 24th, Colonel Hamtramck having completed arrangements for the sailing of the remaining companies; and having received a beautiful sword, presented by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth, left Richmond overland for New Orleans.

On the next day, Oct. 22, in accordance with Wayne's plans, Hamtramck called together a parade of the garrison, fired 15 rounds of cannon, and formally announced that the new fort was to be called Fort Wayne.
The command at Fort Wayne was given to Hamtramck in recognition of his bravery at the battle of Fallen Timbers, but it was a troubled command.
The six companies left at Fort Wayne with Hamtramck in the winter of 1794-95 suffered greatly from the cold, hunger and desperate boredom of the place.

It is interesting to note that Hamtramck in this census locates the nearest Indian village at Terre Haute, though he constantly refers to Indians being in the town of Vincennes and its vicinity.
Hamtramck sent two of these "Illinois Indians" on an embassy to "the Indians on the Wabash" inviting them to cease their depredations or they would be "severely chastised." (Idem) In response to this message "a number of them" came "down from the Weeya" with protestations of their peaceful intentions.
Hamtramck at Vincennes to forward to the "Indians of the Wabash and those of the Miami village" to prepare them for St. Clair's intended arrival at Vincennes.

In 1796, Colonel John Francis Hamtramck, under General Anthony Wayne, commanded the troops, which took possession of Detroit upon the evacuation of the British.
On April 12, 1827, the township was organized, and its village, southeast of present-day Hamtramck Township, was given a post office on October 3, 1828, with Thomas Noxon as its first postmaster.
Hamtramck was incorporated as a village in 1901 and as a city in 1921.

Oyer is given in court by John Rice Jones attorney for Francis Vigo on a note on which he was sued by Thomas Williams and Co of Detroit for One Thousand seven hundred and twenty one pounds and five shillings, dated Dec 31st, 1785.
John Small makes a deposition that in November of 1801 he went in a boat from Vincennes to survey a tract of land at a place called the Rapids of the Wabash authorized by Gov Harrison to survey for William McIntosh; that he was accompanied by Gov. Harrison, Henry Vanderburgh, Col F. Vigo and Capt.
John H. Smith, acting commissioner of the Commission of Revolutionary Claims for the State of Virginia, reported in favor of allowing Francis Vigo’s claims with interest at 5% amounting to a total of $32,654.85.

Over 1,000 students and activists gathered at the Diag on U of M's central campus to hear Sen. John Edwards speak.
It was the last stop on his 10 college tour called "Opportunity Rocks." Sen. Edwards came to get young people more involved in community service, and get them to advocate policies that expand opportunity for people living in poverty.

Hamtramck was a bustling city of 50,000 in the 1930s, completely surrounded by Detroit and still is. The personal history gives a picture of neighborhood activities where the parish church and school preserved some of the culture of village life in eastern Europe, and other community institutions aided in acculturation.
John Francis Hamtramck helped to shape the American army in the West during the Indian wars, served with the 5th New York Regiment in 1777-1778, was part of the Sullivan expedition sent against the Iroquois in 1778-1779, and later saw service at Morristown and in Virginia.

Private John Shaw in his diary records that while recovering from frostbite suffered when he fell into the Ohio, he was put into a barracks room with the sergeant major, Duffy, and his wife, next door the apartment occupied by Col. Harmar and his lady.
It is doubtful if Captain John Hamtramck had his wife with him when he assumed command at Fort McIntosh in 1786.
Ten years later, however, she was drowned while descending the Wabash from Fort Defiance to Vincennes, both of which posts had been commanded by her husband.

The unit under the command of Maj. John P. Wyllys forded the Maumee River not far from the present-day Coombs Street bridge and began an attack on the Indian village.
But Little Turtle responded with an attack of his own, and the U.S. Army regulars were nearly completely destroyed as they fought desperately in hand- to-hand combat.
