Hancock was a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental congress from 1775 till 1780, and from 1785 till 1786, serving as president of that body from May, 25, 1775, till October, 1777.
Hancock then wrote to that officer to the effect that, although probably the largest property-owner in the city, "he was anxious the thing should be done if it would benefit the cause." John Adams said of his character: "Nor were his talents or attainments inconsiderable.
John Hancock recovered and was elected Governor again in 1787 and being re-elected annually served in that capacity until his death in 1793.
